DIY Candle Holders: Add Hygge to Your Home With This Clever Upcycling Idea

As much as we wish that summer could last forever, autumn will be here before we know it. With shorter days and cooler temperatures on the horizon, now’s the perfect time to start thinking of ways to add some hygge, the famous Danish concept of coziness, to your home. And what’s cozier than lighting candles?

In this DIY, we upcycled old table legs into a set of these cute wooden candle holders. In addition to beautifying your home, you’ll feel good making something beautiful for your home while giving new life to a previously loved piece of furniture. Follow these steps to create your own upcycled DIY candle holders.

Materials to make upcycled DIY candle holders in wood

Materials Required:

  • One wooden leg (1 ½ inch x 28 inches)
  • Drill
  • ⅝ inch drill bit
  • Mitre saw
  • Orbital sander
  • 120 grit sandpaper
  • Clamps
  • Square
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Brushes
  • Acrylic paint
  • Dot stickers
  • Masking tape
  • Candles

Step One: Measure and Cut

Let’s start by measuring the wooden leg. You can cut four candle holders. Two will be six inches, and two will be eight inches. Mark these measurements and cut each block using a mitre saw.

Step Two: Sand

Attach the wooden blocks to a table and sand the corners with an orbital sander to achieve smooth edges.

Step Three: Drill 

Right after sanding, mark the center of one end of the wooden block with a square and a pencil and using a drill with a ⅝ inch drill bit, make a hole in the wood about 1 inch deep. Remove all the wood dust before the next step, paint!

Step Four: Create Patterns

In this step, you can get creative and mask the candle holder blocks with tape or dot stickers to achieve different patterns. For a scallop effect, just overlap the dot circles and press firmly. If you’re looking for a more modern look, add masking tape to create a straight line leaving one end painted and one end in natural wood.

Step Five: Paint

Pick your favourite acrylic paint colours and paint the top or bottom ends of your candle holders. Apply up to three coats to ensure the paint covers the wood fully. Allow it to dry to the touch. Then, gently peel the stickers and tape when the paint is fully dry.

And that’s it. You’re done! Now just grab your favourite candle sticks and get ready to light them up in your new beautiful upcycled candle holders.
