Step 1: Clean Up

First things first, give that thrifted vase a good scrub-down. Use some warm soapy water and a sponge to get rid of any dirt or grime. Once it’s clean, dry it off with a towel and let it air dry completely.

Step 2: Colour and Texture

Now, onto the fun part — creating texture. Mix up your white paint with a bit of baking soda to give it some grit. This is where the magic happens: the baking soda adds a cool, grainy texture that’ll make your vase look like it’s made of fancy ceramic. Grab a large paintbrush and start slapping on that textured paint with broad strokes. Cover the vase from top to bottom, making sure to get into all the nooks and crannies. Don’t worry about being too neat — imperfections just add character!

Step 3: Dry Time

Once you’ve coated the whole vase, set it aside to dry. This might take a while (I left mine overnight), so be patient and resist the urge to touch it. Trust me, it’ll be worth the wait.

Step 4: Gilding Wax

Okay, now comes the fancy part: adding some sparkle with gold gilding wax. Grab a rough paintbrush and start adding those touches. Swipe it on wherever you’d like… I concentrated my brush on the raised areas of texture created by our baking soda-paint mixture. Using a fairly dry brush gives you a bit more control of the product.

Keep layering on the gold until you’re happy with how it looks. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try different techniques — you might just stumble upon something amazing!

Step 5: Fill It With Flowers

Now that your gilded masterpiece is complete, it’s time to add the finishing touch – fresh flowers. Fill the vase with water and arrange Mom’s favourite blooms inside.

Who knew that a thrifted vase and a bit of creativity could result in something so special? With this DIY Mother’s Day gift, you’re not just giving Mom a gift, you’re giving her a piece of your heart.
