Materials Required:
- Drill
- Drywall
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Box cutter
- Joint compound
- Stud sensor
- Duct tape
- Trowel
- Sandpaper
- Paint (in the shade of the wall you’re fixing)
Step 1: Assess the Hole
Take a look at the hole in your wall and check to see if there is a stud behind it.

Step 2: Gather Your Tools
Ensure you have everything you’ll need handy (outlined above) to get this small hole patched.
Step 3: Get Your Drywall Ready
Measure and then cut a new piece of drywall that is slightly bigger than the hole you are patching.
Step 4: Put New Drywall on Hole
Trace the outline of your new piece of drywall over the existing hole using your pencil. Once it is fully traced, use your box cutter to cut along the traced lines and take out any extra drywall pieces (so that the new drywall will be able fit).

Step 5: Ensure It Fits Properly
Make sure the new piece of drywall fits properly in the hole, and if so, go ahead by screwing it into place using your drill.
Step 6: Add Joint Compound & Drywall Tape
Apply a thin layer of joint compound and drywall tape over the seams of the new piece of drywall. Then using your trowel, squeeze out any excess mud (or use a mesh drywall patch).
Step 7: Sand the Area
Lightly sand any rough spots, then apply another layer of the mud. Once the second layer of mud is dry, you can lightly sand the patched hole again.
Step 8: Painting the Patched Hole
Apply 2-3 coats of paint, letting it fully dry between each layer. Once the paint is completely dry, you’re all set! You’ve patched a small hole in your wall all by yourself, no expert help required.
