With 2019 coming to a close, Pinterest has released its much-anticipated annual report on the top 100 emerging trends for the year ahead – including home decor and design crazes that will be all the rage in the coming months. From Spanish-style bathrooms and Japanese soaking tubs to greenhouse-inspired spaces and granny pods (yes, you read that correctly), stay ahead of the trends as you enter 2020. Visit our Pinterest page for more inspiration.
Due to expanding work-from-home policies and advanced technology, people are spending more time at home during the weekdays than ever before. Which could go a long way toward explaining the significant uptick in home garden rooms. Pinterest has seen a spike of 104 per cent in searches for personalized secret gardens and plant-filled decor ideas heading into 2020.
Japanese Soaking Tubs
Similar to the traditional soaking tubs you’ve seen rise in popularity over the years, the Japanese variety tends to be smaller, deeper and more circular or oval in shape. Most also come with a bench seat, which is perfect for gazing out the window while you relax.
Indian Living Rooms
This one is a doozy: Pinterest has recorded a massive increase in searches for Indian living room designs – 2,080 per cent to be exact! Liven up your living quarters with shiny brass, low-to-the-ground couches, unique seating arrangements, bright colours and over-sized sculptures in the coming months.
Searches for Spanish-inspired bathrooms are heating up on Pinterest (up by 309 per cent and counting), so be prepared to see more distinct archways, decorative floor tiles, sun-washed tones (think: bright whites or yellows) and spa-like showers – like in this stunner from actor Leonardo DiCaprio’s three-storey Spanish-style hacienda in Los Angeles.
Keep your friends close… and your extended family even closer. That’s right – one of the hottest new home trends according to Pinterest are backyard “granny pods.” Quite literally, places for your retired grandparents to live in relative quiet and comfort. Forget sheds, tiny homes are the new backyard must-have.
Up a whopping 803 per cent in Pinterest searches, the popularity of audio rooms are undeniably on the rise. Say goodbye to music nooks in favour of entire rooms decked out with surround-sound where you can write your own tunes or blast your longtime favourites.
Thrifted Home Decor
Avoid sending furniture and appliances to the landfill in 2020 by filling your home with loved, gently-used thrifted decor. Pinterest has noted a 308 per cent increase in searches, which is in keeping with the current global shift toward conscious consumption and climate change.
Gender-Neutral Kids Playrooms
As we continue to honour gender identities and inclusiveness, 2020 will welcome more “every-kid playrooms” than ever before, according to Pinterest. From books and tents to rock climbing walls and mini jungle gyms, parents and child-care providers are more in tune with the needs of their little ones by steering clear of gendered colours, toys and labels. See how the Property Brothers make kid-friendly spaces feel just as chic as adult ones.
Feng Shui Decor
The ancient Chinese philosophy about seeking balance and harmony between elements extended into the home front a few years ago. Now it’s back with an even greater zen-like approach in an effort to create comforting, vibrant and re-energized rooms that will help you de-stress.
Home Coffee Stations
Carve out some space on your kitchen counter or island that you can dedicate entirely to your love of coffee. Creating a high-end tribute to caffeine will give you a place to decompress after a long day or help to kick off your morning in your own mini sanctuary.
Home Theatre Designs
You don’t actually need to have a home movie theatre in order to effectively recreate one with a few furniture hacks. Whether you indulge in an over-sized TV, surround sound speakers or recliner seats, we’re fairly confident they’ll be some of the best things you’ve ever bought for your home.
Australian Garden Landscaping
Attention, green thumbs! Pretend you’re on the other side of the globe and prep your garden with drought-tolerant grasses, foliage plants, living walls and stone paths. For more inspiration, check out these rock garden ideas to beautify your backyard.
“Shabby chic” is the name of the game in 2020, as Pinterest has noted a 384 per cent increase in searches for French antiques (think: patinated mirrors, farm linens and chunky dressers). So say “oui” to that antique dresser you inherited and planned on discarding. Turns out you just might be on trend for the new year. Speaking of “old,” is glass tile making a comeback?
Outdoor Cat Playgrounds
Trends focused on pampering pets are steadily rising, according to Pinterest. So instead of searching out a cat playground to take your beloved furry companion on the weekend, why not install a smaller version in your own backyard? Custom structures for cats to claw, climb and shimmy are up in searches by 512 per cent.
Outdoor Kitchen Bars
Host a social gathering or enjoy a relaxed evening in your backyard this summer without ever having to head back inside to grab another drink. Whether you want it installed on your back porch or in a renovated shed, outdoor kitchen bars will be all the rage in 2020 – really! Pinterest has seen a search growth of 2,795 per cent heading into the new year. It’s going to be a good summer, we think.
Whether you’re unsure of your baby’s sex or simply want to avoid pushing gender-conforming stereotypes on your little bundle of joy, there are plenty of reasons why expectant parents are opting for unisex nurseries in 2020. And we guarantee these gender-neutral nurseries will give you new decor goals.
Outdoor Dog Toilets
Talk about puppy love! Pee pits and patio potties are top of mind for millennial dog owners heading into 2020. Rejigging a backyard layout to designate an area for the needs of their beloved pooch is no hassle, as many owners seem open to the idea of cutting back on their outdoor space for their pets.
During the long winter months, brighten your indoor space by introducing some serious summer vibes in the form of herbs, sprouts and other garden favourites. With the recent spike in popularity on Pinterest, it looks like more homeowners are ready to create their own indoor greenhouses, year-round.
Goat Pallet Playhouses
Sadly, most of us don’t have our own pet goat to pamper and yet Pinterest has seen a spike in searches for fun playhouses and wooden structures designed specifically for everyone’s favourite farm animal. As a result, you just might notice more reworked gardens and pallet playhouses (for prime goat balancing practice) at your local farms this coming summer.
