Bring Southwestern Flair to Your Holiday Decor With This DIY Cactus Stocking

While I can embrace the holiday season’s chilly winter weather, I’ll also bring the heat by injecting southwestern charm into my decor. This simple DIY cactus stocking, with its cheerful hues and crafty details, will brighten up your living space – and spirits! All you need is a few dollar-store items (and a selection holiday treats to stuff it with.)

Tiffany Pratt is the Queen of Craft. Known for her signature colourful style, she’s brought her unique sense of design to HGTV Canada’s Buy It, Fix It, Sell It and Home to Win.

Here’s what you’ll need for your DIY cactus stocking:

  • 2 large pieces of green felt
  • Chalk or a marker
  • Pink and lime green yarn
  • Plastic stitching needle (or your preferred yarn stitching needle)
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Treats for your stocking!

Step One: Trace and Cut the Felt
Carefully stack the two pieces of green felt. Trace the shape of a stocking using chalk or a marker. Cut along the trace line to create two identical stocking shapes.

Step Two: Stitch the Felt Together
Cut off a long piece of the lime green yarn and start to stitch along the edge of the stocking. Leave the top part open so it can be stuffed with treats! Tie off the edge and trim the excess yarn. Repeat with a piece of pink yarn, in between the lime green stitches.

Step Three: Create Prickly Bundles and Glue Them Onto Stocking
Trim two-inch pieces of both colours of yarn. Create little 2-3 piece bundles, tying them together. Using your hot glue gun, attach the bundles along the front of the stocking to create some texture, bringing your cactus to life.

Step Four: Fill the Stocking
Fill up your DIY cactus stocking with all the sugar, or other fun and colourful items. It’s totally up to you! I filled mine with a whole bunch of Pixy Stix for a rainbow-bright rush of sugar and style.
