How to Design a Playful Kids’ Nook

0:30

Who doesn’t love a fun kids’ playroom? They’re so fun to design but without the right storage, children’s playrooms can quickly become prone to messes. Keep the cute and cut the clutter with these clever ideas that won’t break the bank.

Step 1: Create a Whimsical Accent Wall

DIY aficionado and YouTuber Alexandra Gater’s first step in creating a small play area was installing a whimsical accent wall using wallpaper. This is a great, quick way to add a playful splash of colour to bare walls.

Look for patterns in vibrant colours but avoid anything too childish that kids will quickly outgrow. Ideally, you want this play area to evolve with children as they age.

Step 2: Layer Cozy Textures, Like a Big Floor Rug

A big fluffy rug makes a room look so inviting, especially in a playroom, where kids tend to play games on the floor.

The IKEA PEDERSBORG rug has a beautiful fringe detail that adds a playful bohemian vibe.

Step 3: Use Organizers to Make Storage & Cleaning Simple

A low dresser, like the IKEA SMÅSTAD / UPPFÖRA, is a great piece for a playroom because it makes it easy for kids to find items on their own (and hopefully put things away, too!)

To avoid cluttered drawers, Alexandra used IKEA GODMORGON containers with lids to store things like beads, coloured pencils, paint, markers and paper. When craft supplies have a designated home in boxes or baskets, a quick clean up is more likely and supplies won’t go missing.

Step 4: Define Play Zones Within the Space

To create a playroom that meets the many needs of children’s play, Alexandra defined the zones of the room using durable furniture, decor and storage pieces.

A reading nook was designed with the IKEA MELLÖSA picture ledge, where books could be displayed at children’s height. Below, a cozy nook was created on the floor with pillows and throws, giving kids a spot to cuddle up with their favourite book. On another wall, Alexandra hung the playful IKEA BÄSTIS wall hooks to create a dress up space. Finally, a craft area was completed with the ultra affordable IKEA LÄTT table and chairs. For playroom furniture that sees a lot of wear and tear, durability and affordability are key.

When designing a kid’s playroom, while fun is the guiding principle, organization should be a close second. With the right home accessories and affordable furniture options from IKEA, you can create a playful nook for kids (with practical storage solutions for parents!).
