In this sustainable DIY, we will show you how simple it is to create a DIY pendant light from old dishes (yes, dishes). Are you ready to get started? Let’s have some fun!

DIY Lampshade Materials (using Old Tableware)

Materials Required: 

  • Any plastic plates, bowls, cups
  • Measuring tape
  • Hanging light cord
  • Pencil
  • Hot glue sticks
  • Clamps (optional if needed)

Tools Required:

  • Drill
  • 1/4 inch drill bit
  • Hot glue gun

DIY A Custom Light Fixture From Upcycled Tableware

Step One: Prep The Tableware 

Firstly, you need to plan the design of your fixture. For example, we suggest you mix different shapes (bowls, plates) and different colours to achieve a modern style. Right after, use a measuring tape and a pencil to find the middle and mark it.

Step Two: Drill 

After the prep, use a drill and make a hole big enough to pull the light cord through – A 1/4 inch drill bit is great for a standard cord.

Tip: When drilling plastic tableware, it’s a good idea to use a slow speed so the material won’t crack during the process.

Step Three: Hot Glue The Pieces

Once the old plates and bowls are ready with new holes in the middle, center them together and add hot glue to secure all the pieces into one single lampshade. Apply a bit of pressure and let it dry for a few seconds.

Step Four: Add a Light Cord

Finish assembling the new fixtures just by adding the light cord and hang them in your favourite spot.
