Go inside some of the most jaw-dropping kitchen transformations, as featured on Open House Overhaul. By Amber Dowling
Don’t miss Open House Overhaul, Monday nights at 10e/p!
Fresh and Modern
The kitchen is often referred to as the soul of a house. So if you’re going to be spending a lot of time there, you want a bright, cheerful and inviting space with plenty of buyer appeal.
Yellow and Sallow
Before, this kitchen was outdated and in desperate need of a little personality. Although it got plenty of light, the cream cupboards and appliances were soaking it all in.
Modern Appeal
After Sam got her hands on this space, she proved just how valuable new cupboards, an updated backsplash and a small island can be.
Table for One
When a kitchen is big enough for an eat-in area, you want to make it as bright and cheerful as possible. After all, this is where you’ll start each and every day.
Breakfast Bar
But who says you need to have a table? By inserting a small breakfast bar instead, Sam was able to open up the room and double the storage.
It Doesn’t Show Well
Never underestimate the importance of a clean, well-maintained house with some minor staging. A lot of people don’t have the vision to look beyond what’s in front of their eyes and imagine what could be. Dirty floors, ugly paint colours and cracked windows can be real turnoffs, so make sure you’ve made everything look as good as it possibly can.
Dial it Back
The same splash of citrus via accent colours on a neutral white backdrop suddenly feels like a brand new space.
Room with a View
No one likes to do dishes, but doing them in this space feels especially drab thanks to dark countertops and older cupboards that soak up all of the sun.
Lighten Up
Afterwards, with lighter countertops, some neutral grey accents and upgraded hardware, suddenly doing dishes don’t seem that bad after all.
Feeling Blue
Colour us blue that this kitchen’s colour scheme has taken the theme entirely too far.
New Ground
Take all of that blue away, and suddenly you have a huge kitchen with lots of cupboard space.
Floating Island
Prospective buyers want to be able to see themselves entertaining in their kitchen. Adding a floating island, which can be moved to suit any purpose, is genius.
Empty and bare
When it comes to kitchens, personality is just as important as in the rest of the house. Here, we have all the essentials, but none of the pop.
A Cook’s Haven
Enter Sam, and through an updated backsplash and bright new appliances, this kitchen suddenly looks like it can be lived in.
Oversized Tables
As for the eat-in area? Crowded and cluttered thanks to this oversized table, which takes up all of the space.
Good Morning, Sunshine
Afterwards, the addition of a banquette and a much smaller table not only increases the space, but adds a bit of secret storage, too.
A Throwback Kitchen
Sure, this kitchen is functional, but it’s also crowded and mismatched. Prospective buyers look at this and see one thing: work.
From a Magazine
Rip out some of those overhead cupboards though, add a modern backsplash and suddenly this space seems like it’s been ripped from the pages of a home decor magazine.
Bonus Storage
No worries about losing storage space here — while the overhead cupboards are gone, Sam installed a floor-to-ceiling pantry that’s pretty and boasts the same storage power.
Utilize the Space
This eat-in kitchen simply fades into the background and features no lounge appeal. Families that dine here are bound to eat and run.
Welcome Home
Afterwards, with a touch of black modernity, a smaller table and a new light fixture, this is a standalone spot that makes the space feel even bigger than it actually is. Now that’s worth sticking around for.
The Long Haul
Smaller kitchens are in need of some TLC too. This long one feels small and cramped thanks to mismatched finishes.
Go Dark
Suddenly, with updated cupboards, this same spot (with the same backsplash and all) feels modern and fun.
Family Eating
As for the eat-in, it’s gone through an overhaul of its own thanks to a bench (with bonus storage), bright accents and a smaller table. Bon appétit!
