Renovating your bathroom can get pretty expensive. If you’re on a budget and your bathroom cabinets have seen better days, this simple and stylish DIY is for you. For less than $100, you’ll have more modern-looking bathroom cabinetry in no time.
- Half round wood dowels
- Measuring tape
- Carpenter’s glue
- Power drill
- Door knobs
Step One: Customize Your Cabinets
Before you revamp your bathroom vanity, think about how you want your final cabinet to look. There are so many budget-friendly ways to customize cabinets using paint, dowels and knobs. In this example, we opted for a cheerful peach colour and will use dowels to convert our old cabinet into a fluted design.
Step Two: Disassemble Your Cabinet Doors
Start by unscrewing your existing cabinet doors and hardware and move the cabinet door onto a flat surface.
Step Three: Cut Your Dowels and Glue Them
To achieve a fluted style cabinet, use half-round dowels as the moulding for the front doors. Measure the length and cut your dowels to the proper size using a jigsaw. Then, add carpenters glue and attach them starting at the end of the door one by one. Repeat the process until you fill the entire door and let them dry overnight.
Step Four: Nail the Dowels
If you want the dowels to be extra secure, you can nail the cabinets down to the door at the top and bottom of each dowel. Use wood filler to fill any nail holes and gaps and let it dry for a couple of hours.
Step Five: Paint the Cabinet Sides
While the dowels dry and set, use your choice of paint colour to give the bathroom cabinets some much needed love.
Step Six: Paint the Cabinet Doors
After the sides of the cabinets are done, paint the dowels and let them dry for a few hours. Add a second coat and let it dry overnight.
Step Seven: Add the Doors Back and New Knobs
Once the paint is dry, you can attach both doors back to the cabinet and install the new door knobs using a power drill.
Voila! You just created a brand new, modern and stylish bathroom cabinet for less than $100.
