In case you aren’t quite familiar with the Japandi movement, it’s a design trend that embraces calming colours, clean lines, earth tones and plenty of wood details — something we’re clearly obsessed with.

Step 1: Create a Lamp Base

Gather all of your materials and set them up on a clean table. First, you’ll need to create a “nest” using your brown paper — this is where you will place the lamp base. The messier the nest is, the better for the final results! Now, grab a piece of parchment paper and set it on top of the brown paper nest.

Step 2: Glue the Lamp Layers Together

Now the fun part begins: mix your water and the white glue in a cup (making sure it is as liquid as possible) and start placing two paper towel sheets on top of the parchment paper. Add the watered-down glue mixture by spreading it with a paintbrush and then place another layer of paper towel on top.

Repeat this process until you achieve the desired lamp thickness you’re after — we did about 12 layers.

Step 3: Add Dried Flowers (& Allow to Dry)

To achieve a very “Japandi” aesthetic, we added two-toned dried flowers to the last layer of the lamp. Carefully spread them out by using your fingers and then add a final layer of paper towel on top. Add the glue mixture on top with your paintbrush, ensuring the flowers don’t fall off when it’s set.

Now let your lamp dry for at least 24 hours. You’ll notice the paper will turn hard when it’s complete. Remove the dried lamp from the nest slowly and use your scissors to trim the edges for a cleaner look.

Step 4: Attach the Cord Set

With a pencil, draw the diameter of your lamp socket and cut it out using your exacto knife very carefully. You’ll now be able to place the lamp base inside the socket. Adding a fun bulb and a colourful cable will automatically enhance this DIY even more.
