The Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge Kicks Off With Retro Glam

9:48

In celebration of the release of the new Barbie movie, HGTV has assembled the ultimate dream teams to overhaul one home into the ultimate Barbie Dreamhouse. Supermodel Ashley Graham hosts the all-new Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, as eight teams of familiar faces complete to create a real-life Barbie pad.

Each week, two teams will go head-to-head to remodel a portion of the house in the style of one of Barbie’s many eras. The teams, with their own Barbie superfan, will be vying for victory and a stay in Barbie’s own home. Read on to see how the first two teams transformed an ordinary home into the life-size dream home of the one and only, Barbie.

Don’t miss new episodes of Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV Canada, also available on the Global TV App and on STACKTV with Amazon Prime Video Channels, fuboTV, Rogers Ignite TV, and Ignite SmartStream.

A 90’s Neon Revival

As far as entries go there was nothing wrong with this one, a solid starting point. However, you’d never call it a home fit for Barbie and so the reno began.

For team Egypt and Mike (Married to Real Estate) their assignment was ‘Barbiefying’ the entryway and living/dining room. Since their decade was the 90’s, they immediately reached for the neon paint. Through colour blocking, splatter paint, and bright patterns, they created a space reminiscent of spandex and scrunchies. For their ‘toyetic’ feature, they created a functioning pet elevator just like the classic Barbie dream homes of the era. Now both Barbie and her pooch can get around in style.

Normally there’s nothing wrong with a bit of wood tone, but this was a special case. When we think of Barbie there’s only one colour that comes to mind; pink!

For team Jasmine (Help! I Wrecked My House) and Antonia (Food Network’s Beachside Brawl) they were tasked with bringing Barbie glam to the kitchen and family room. With inspiration from the original Barbie Dreamhouse, they got to work manifesting mid-century. Antonia brought her experience to the kitchen, packed with pastel pink and 60’s appliances. Meanwhile, Jasmine made a mid-century modern masterpiece in the family room, even recreating Barbie’s first couch. This dream home is about fashion and function, only the best for Barbs.

Tune in for next week’s Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV Canada. It is also available on the Global TV App and on STACKTV with Amazon Prime Video Channels, fuboTV, Rogers Ignite TV, and Ignite SmartStream.
