Nicole and Caffery Design an Ultra-Moody Basement Speakeasy

2:36

When renovating there’s always a natural list of priorities. Kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces have high priority. A little further down the list you’ll find bed and laundry rooms, maybe a pantry. The one space that always seems to be last is the basement. It’s true for all of us and it was true for homeowners Krysti and Dana. The couple had completed their renovations on the main and upper floor, all the was left was an unfinished basement. They’d dreamed of a basement speakeasy but didn’t know how to make those dreams a reality. The space was a blank canvas and they needed Nicole Babb and Caffery Vanhorne of Styled  to transform it into the ultra-moody basement speakeasy of their dreams.

Option Overload

One problem people don’t consider when renovating a basement is defining the space. For most people they neglect the importance of defining a space’s purpose. This is one of the reasons that so many just become excess storage. However, Krysti and Dana had lots of plans for the space: a wet bar, lounge area, games table, home gym, and even a new bathroom. All of this, and a chic modern speakeasy aesthetic, was a tall order, but the team was up to the task.

Spectacular Speakeasy

Entertaining was a priority for these homeowners, so setting the mood was crucial. Nicole and Caffery wanted to create a space full of whimsy and intrigue while keeping its sense of maturity. On top of all of that, the space needed to function as a home gym, entertaining space, and bathroom without feeling cramped. Moody lighting, a secret door, and a wallpapered feature wall with an eye-popping neon sign were just a few of the ways the team accomplished just that. Now every game night will be something special in this basement speakeasy.
