Mia and Rob's Most Amazing Space-Saving Transformations

New parents Alex and Alexie's house was not working with their demanding work schedules. A cramped, squeaky second floor meant they couldn’t shower or get undressed upstairs without waking the baby and are were forced to wash and change clothes in the kitchen.

Alex and Alexie chose Rob's design plan to renovate the downstairs living area, giving him $35,000 to work with.

Rob and Mia took advantage of all the unused space in their unfinished basement. Gary and Irina had a small house, two kids and not enough space.

From preparing food in the kids’ playroom, doing crafts in the kitchen, and eating meals on the couch, this family was crawling all over each other.

Rob and Mia opened up the space by removing the dividing wall between the kitchen and living area.

Removing the wall allowed for an actual dining space, a sectional couch and entertainment area and a wide, open kitchen.

With the dining space placed out of the way of the cooking area, the kitchen is now a large, functional space for cooking family dinners.

Every homeowner knows that a bigger kitchen means more counter space. And every cook knows that more counter space means a better kitchen!

Krista and Vinh were in desperate need of an adults only space to unwind and call their own. With a tiny master bathroom that could barely fit the two of them, and a sauna that acted as their storage closet, they called upon Rob and Mia to help them build an oasis for adults.

Krista and Vinh chose Mia's design for opening up the master bedroom and ensuite. Rob and Mia scaled the walls back and gave them a coffered ceiling to reclaim some valuable inches in the bedroom.

They installed a walk-in closet by using the space within the walls so Krista and Vinh could keep their clothing all in one place.

Sasha and Scott loved their neighbourhood and their house but the layout was beyond strange. The master bedroom had a walk-in closet INSIDE the bathroom, which also acted as an office area that was only accessible through the master bedroom. They needed Rob and Mia to solve this spatial riddle.

With one child still sleeping in their room and Sasha’s desire to add a third, they were in desperate need of another bedroom, a bathroom and a separate office to manage Sasha’s successful home business.

Rob and Mia worked hard around the clock to build this couple an entirely new second floor.

By changing the structural layout of the second floor, the office was much more open and bright.

Their eldest son was also given his own room.

His room was complete with a bunk bed, study area and his own master bathroom!

Ally's room, which was once a hallway to the office, was turned into an actual bedroom. Sasha and Scott were thrilled to be able to give their daughter a bedroom fit for a princess.

Tessa and Phil's son and daughter were constantly fighting because they had to share a bedroom. Rob and Mia were called just in time to stop World War Three!

The shared bedroom was given to Tessa and Phil's son, so Rob and Mia implemented a design that would reflect his own unique personality.

By shifting the bed into where the wall was recessed and utilizing the space in front of the window, Rob and Mia also created a study area.

There were tons of opportunities for creative, space-saving solutions, such as this cozy reading nook!

To create a bedroom for Tessa and Phil's daughter, Rob and Mia looked up to the attic for answers ...

It turns out there was plenty of hidden spaces to be explored and put to use.

By intelligently working with the slanted attic ceiling, they placed the bed's headboard where the slope met the wall at the lowest point to make sure the height of the room is located where it counts.

They were even able to give her her very own ensuite bathroom! This is an invaluable perk that every girl can appreciate.

Rob explains, "We reclaimed space where it didn't exist. I added structure to it. I moved walls. I moved plumbing. I moved heating. Stacey and Omer felt like prisoners in a dungeon in their dark, cramped home.

The rooms were gloomy, dark and lacking in storage.

Their kitchen was also totally dysfunctional.

Mia and Rob were challenged with creating a light-filled functional space for this family of four.

Their first order of business was to maximize the light flowing into the front hallway by creating a proper, closed storage unit along the wall, painting it a bright white. This unit acted as the new room divider where a wall used to be.

By moving furniture away from the windows their family room was finally flooded with energizing light.

Continuing the bright white theme, Rob and Mia renovated the kitchen to better suit their spatial needs. The overhead cabinets were lifted up away from the counters so their work areas were no longer crowded.
