- Cookie scoop
- Bird feed
Step One: Prepare the Fruit
Slice a large grapefruit, blood orange, or cantaloupe in half. Remove all the flesh from the inside using a cookie scoop or large spoon. Gently pat the fruit dry with a paper towel.
Step Two: Cut the Pieces of String
Cut eight equally long pieces of string and tie them all together in one large knot at the base. You can trim your string at the end of the process to achieve your desired hanging length.
Step Three: Section the String Into Four Pairs
Divide the eight strings into pairs facing in opposite directions. Tie each pair together with a small knot approximately an inch or two away from the bottom knot.
Step Four: Tie the Last Pieces of String Together
Divide the pairs of string into four new pairs by carefully pairing adjacent strings together. Tie the new pairs together with a small knot about an inch or two away from the previous knot.
Step Five: Fill With Bird Feed
Gently place the fruit cup into the string cradle. Fill it with homemade or store-bought bird feed. If you’re making your own bird feed, you can use a combination of sunflower seeds, raisins, chopped peanuts, cracked corn, and dried fruit. Gather up all the pieces of string and tie together in one large knot at the top.
Step Six: Hang on a Branch
Find a sturdy spot to hang your new DIY bird feeder by a window or near an outdoor dining area. Refill the bird feed and replace the fruit as necessary.
