How to Make a Wood Palette Herb Garden Perfect for Backyards and Balconies

Whether you have a green thumb or are simply a self-proclaimed foodie, herb gardens are the perfect addition to any home. Potted herbs are available in most grocery stores, and they’re affordable and so easy to maintain. If you’re looking for an easy way to upgrade your outdoor living space, this wood palette herb garden is the perfect project for summer for you. Here’s how to create your own.

Materials Required:

  • Wooden palette
  • Medium grit sandpaper
  • Microfibre cloth
  • Exterior-safe paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Power drill
  • Four-inch hose clamps (eight in total)
  • Bolts (eight in total)
  • Washers (eight in total)
  • Nuts (eight in total)
  • Four-inch terracotta pots (eight in total)
  • Potted herbs (eight in total)
  • Potting soil
  • Spade
  • Gardening gloves

Instructions:

Step One: Find a heat-treated wooden palette. Hardware stores will usually give them to you for free! We found ours on the curb in an industrial area of town.

Step Two:  Sand the palette until it’s smooth with medium-grit sandpaper.

Step Three: Wipe down all sanding dust with a microfiber cloth.

Step Four:  Paint the palette in any colour (or colours) you wish! Let the paint dry.

Step Five: Once the paint is fully dry, predrill holes in the palette where you want the terracotta pots to sit.

Step Six: Next, predrill holes in the hose clamps.

Step Seven: Then, use a bolt to attach each hose clamp to the palette. Add a washer and nut to the backside to secure it in place.

Step Eight: Plant the herbs into terracotta pots. You can also paint your clay pots first!

Step Nine:  After, place each pot into the hose clamp so it sits comfortably. Adjust the hose clamps to ensure the pots are secure in place.

Step Ten: Water your plants and watch them grow!
