HGTV Canada’s Facebook fan Michelle Genée  asked, “Hardwood or laminate flooring? (Not my forever home, but need to be smart for resale.) And, colour of floors for a small bungalow? Dark or light?”

Sarah Richardson replied, “I always vote for solid hardwood or engineered flooring as I like the real thing. Laminate is cheap, but it can also look cheap (although it is definitely getting better and looking more realistic). The good news is that if you shop around you should be able to find a good quality engineered or hardwood floor at a price point you can afford. I also prefer a mid-tone wood as I think it’s the most timeless finish. Anything too dark shows dirt and wear easily, and anything too light can seem outdated. I tend to opt for a wood finish that is close to the colour of natural walnut. Good luck!

Watch episode seven of Real Potential (featured in the photo above) to see how great an inexpensive engineered floor from a big box store can look when installed.
