Hey Bryan…Can I install a laminate floor over an existing ceramic tile floor in the kitchen area?
You sure can! Laminate, engineered hardwood, or any other type of floating floor can be installed over any hard, flat surface. As long as the existing tile in your kitchen is still attached to the floor and in good shape, you shouldn’t have any problems. Be sure to use a high quality underlayment to help keep footsteps to a dull roar in the room below.
Apart from the shape of the existing ceramic floor, consider the elevation of the flooring materials adjacent to the kitchen – you will need either transition or reducer strips to create a smooth joint between the floors. Installing laminate over your tile in an existing kitchen also means you’ll need to make a lot of cuts around the base of your cabinets, and finish those areas with shoe molding or ¼ round. Make sure you leave a ¼” gap around the room (and cabinet bases) to allow for expansion and contraction and also avoid annoying squeaks.
