First I have to say Disaster DIY is my favorite show. I love the way you teach people how to do these renovations. I am planning to renovate my bathroom. It currently doesn’t have a bathroom vent. Should I go out the roof or the side of the house? It will work either way. Also do you need an apprentice? My wife already told me if the bathroom doesn’t go well she will be giving you a call, lol.
Well thanks! Now I’ll try to help you avoid being ON the show…If you’re not able to get access through the roof, venting out the side is OK, but not ideal. Your best option is to go straight up and out. Warm moist air rises, and condenses when it hits a cold surface – you don’t want that air rising into your soffit vents in the winter.
When you cut through the ceiling to install the new fan, make sure you replace the insulation and vapour barrier so it’s continuous around and over the fan. Also make sure your duct running from the fan to the roof vent is insulated to avoid condensation, or heat loss into the attic. If you’re not experienced with installing vents and repairing shingles, I’d recommend calling in a roofer – you won’t be able to finish the bathroom if you fall off the roof, and you don’t want a leak in your brand new bathroom.
Good luck with the reno, and tell your wife I look forward to hearing from her! I mean, I’m sure you’ll be fine…
