The Dining Room

by Sarah Richardson

Episode: "The Dining Room," season 1

How formal are you … really? This is the big question I pose to most clients. Do you actually, truly, honestly need a "formal" separate dining room? Do you entertain on a regular basis and eat off the "good china" on all entertaining occasions?

The reason I ask is that I usually encounter resistance when I suggest taking down the wall between the kitchen and dining room to create a more open flow and better use of space. Homeowners tend to cling to the idea of having a "formal" dining room, yet they lead very casual lives.

Removing a section of wall doesn't mean that the dining room becomes cafeteria casual. I think you can maintain a sense of elegance and sophistication in your dining area while creating a space that actually works for your lifestyle. Opening the kitchen to the dining room really works in smaller houses, especially for young families who want to keep an eye on roaming youngsters.

  Table
Here are some suggestions:

Mix it up with fabrics

If you're thinking about introducing some upholstery to the room, why not add more than one fabric? End chairs can be chosen to add a decorative accent to the room, so why not treat them to a stunning fabric befitting the king and queen who will be seated in them? Keep your choices for fabrics in the same colour family, but don't hesitate to have some fun. After all, you'll be eating, and likely spilling, on these chairs, so they'll need to be re-upholstered at some point. On that note, I'd suggest that you be practical on the price point so you don't feel the need to disown guests with a tendency to drop food on the furniture.

Move it off centre

There's no reason your table has to sit perfectly centred in the room (save for the simple fact that the junction box for your chandelier is located there, but that's easy to move). To make better use of the available space and create a better path to the wide doors I installed leading to the garden, I opted for a banquette pushed against the wall and chairs on the other sides of the table. The banquette is comfy and cushy, reminiscent of a restaurant, and able to accommodate extra guests if you're willing to make the squeeze. Now there's room to roam on the kitchen side, enough that I was able to create a bar area complete with stools for casual dining and cocktail chatter.

Go big or don't bother

Next to hanging art too high, under-scaled chandeliers are the most common decorating faux pas. Without seeing your dining room, it's hard to say exactly what size your chandelier should be, but I can give you some guidelines. A diameter of 24 inches is always too small, period. Somewhere in the range of 28 to 32 inches is likely better. Chances are, chandeliers with four to five arms are too small; six is likely the way to go. The diameter shouldn't be larger than the width of your table (or your tall guests will hit their heads when they get up).

Hang it right

Hanging chandeliers too high is another no-no. (Oops, this is one more for the faux pas list.) This time I can give you the rule of thumb: The lowest point of you chandelier should be 30 to 36inches above your tabletop. I tend to like them somewhere around 32 inches, but in this case the table will be slid in and out to allow guests to access the banquette, so I raised to the upper end of the rule book at 36. It may seem low when you are hanging it, but trust me, it's right!

Sit pretty and be comfy

Whether you choose upholstered chairs or not, the only thing I care about it is that they be comfortable. Nothing ruins a good dinner party like bad chairs. If you find your guests wriggling in their seats as the hours pass, it's either a sign of dull conversation or uncomfortable chairs. Best get some new chairs and some fine wines for your next party, and you'll be the toast of the town.

Dress up your windows

Whether or not privacy is an issue, I always opt for dining room drapes. I don't like black windows at night; they seem cold, hard and lifeless. Shimmery, silky drapes, on the other hand, dampen the noise of a lively dinner party, and catch the glow of light from your perfectly hung chandelier and your sparkly, candlelit tabletop. No matter if the occasion is formal or informal, your drapes will look like a perfectly fitted ball gown and will always be dressed for dinner.

Dim it down

In my house, every light is on a dimmer. Not everyone agrees with this approach, but the dining room switch is one that's not up for discussion. Every light in the dining room should be dimmable so you can set the table, create a dynamite meal, turn down the lights and dial up the mood.

I've had the "how low to hang the chandelier" argument a few times with my husband! He refuses to believe that it should be as low as 30" from the top of the table. I'm so glad you've backed me up here - I'm sending him this link right now.

Thanks Sarah!

I have often flip-flopped on the idea of having a room as a "formal" dining room. Right now I believe it would be a waste of space since my husband & I only eat at one table and the other room is just a waster of space. My biggest concern was having a banquet- I really want one. Now I know that it is okay to have an open concept kitchen/dining room and still look elegant, casual and ab-solutly fabulous :)

Thanks again Sarah for your awesome inspiration!

Great Job! What a beautiful living/dinning space you have created. We are going through (well just started) a renovation for the dinning/living area. I am trying to convince my husband to have a French door leading onto the garden from the dinning room (just like yours). But he thinks it is not right that the only entrance from the garden is in the dinning especially for the dog. What do you all think?

I love how this dining room can be dressed up to look classy but also be used as a dinner table during the week. It saves space by not having two seperate spaces. Katherine: I agree with your husband and you; but the french dorrs in pff the dining room but also have a sliding door in the kitchen that is less formal for everyday.

I have yet to watch an episode of either of your shows that I have been disappointed with your choice of decorating ideas. I love how you put things together, and everything always seems to "belong" together. Excellent show and ideas from concept to the finished product. Thanks for such inspiration!

I was surprised to read someone comment that your designs do not vary. Not sure how many episodes she has seen between your three options but I would not that variation is quite evident. Thanks again for the insight and the inspiration. Now, how do I hire you??

Really enjoy watching you all at work. Great to see Tommy taking a prominent role in this series. All tam members are have their own specialties - a really nice balance. Interested to see that wall paper has made a come back. I love the clean and polished look each room has and thought the design style was quite unique to each space especially the built ins. My husband wants me to stop watching your show. It's costing him too much money haha. A huge fan and would like to travel to your showroom to view your furniture and fabrics. Really nice work. Where do you find time for all that shopping!!

Love, love, love everything Sarah does. Will she be putting in columns on the basement episode as well as the backyard episode? I heard somewhere that Sarah may get into designing rugs, light fixtures etc. When? I'm holding off on buying anything. How about a book?

I have been watching a lot of design shows for the past few years. Your shows are the best. You unfailingly design spaces which are have so much class and "lasting power". I enjoy the fun you all have on the show, (parking tickets included!!)as much as the beautiful rooms you design. Personality is SO important and you have nailed it! Thank you so much! Stephanie

Love the whole house - couple of questions - I love the look of the banquette; is it practical for getting into and out of? And - hardwood in the kitchen?; I have installers telling me it's not a great idea but stone is cold and hard underfoot and hard on knees for us "cooks" (no takeout - I have to save for the reno's!. Ideas anyone?

Now that I've given my two bits worth on the laundry and mudroom, I can sit back with a nice glass of cranberry juice and have an elegant dinner by candlelight. Light, fresh, elegant palettes in such areas of the house appeals to this Viking. Not a big fan of wallpaper as I prefer artwork or mirrors, but I'm definitely sold on the chandelier. Now, see that wood floor? Perfect for the mudroom. But that's personal style: clip a little element here, clip a little element there. Cheerio!

One of the things I MOST enjoy about watching Sarah and her team is when the design/style varies in WOW ways from the outset to the final installation - she's not afraid - or mortified - to make changes or to consider a misjudged step a learning opportunity. The initial ideas - and the variety of end products are classy, sexy, elegant and cool. Love it and keep it up Sarah!

Hello Sarah: You're the top designer on HGTV right now! Too bad you don't come in Quebec to give new looks to some of our interiors... because we would really like your input (or a show) on some renovations we're about to undertake. In fact, we're about to make a dining room out of our library/TV room that was always supposed to be a dining room, but since there're only the two of us here, my husband and I, we felt there was no need for that. Now, things have changed: we have grand-children and a 'real' dining room now seems a good idea. We have a house by the water (Viceroy/Lindal style) constructed 5 years ago. The current dining area/breakfast nook is in the kitchen like a pop-out solarium (all surrounded with windows). We would like to use that space as a den because we spend a lot of time there reading, taking a coffee, spreading all sort of papers, magazines on the table; it's always a mess, and a clean-up has to be made before each meal. The library/TV room is adjacent to the kitchen and we would like to take part of the wall down to make it open with the new dining room it would become. We already have Winsor chairs (Montana) in black/antiqued, and we plan to buy the table as well. I don't know about a buffet, a bench, a fixture, window treatment (the windows are facing the lake!), etc. And I don't know about the new den in the kitchen, again with a view on the lake.
Would you, by any wonderful chance, consider making a show in our house - you would have 'carte blanche' - and believe me, you would not be disapointed. I can send you some pictures if the idea sounds good to you.
Congratulations on your new baby girl. How old is she now? 1 year or so? And Robin is such a beautiful name; too bad we can't use it here as it is a boy's name for the French speaking people.

No matter what your answer is, you will continue to be my hero in terms of design!!!
