The Kitchen

by Sarah Richardson

Episode: "The Kitchen," season 1

Whether you're a gourmet cook or the height of your culinary ability is making toast, the kitchen is still the best place to invest your renovation dollars. It's at the heart of the home, the gathering place for the family's daily meals, and the most happening location during any party.

BreakfastGiven that the kitchen has so many important roles to play, it's not hard to see why creating the ultimate hub can be a stressful undertaking. My approach to renovating this space is more tried and true than experimental, but that doesn't mean all my kitchens look alike.

I've never done the same thing twice and am constantly looking for new materials and finishes to introduce. Here's what I'm always thinking when I tackle a new kitchen design.

Forget about triangles
My No. 1 aim is to achieve a great layout with long runs of counter space for preparation areas. I don't subscribe to the silly "triangle rule" — that the layout should be dictated by three points: the refrigerator, cooking area and sink, and all of them should be within easy reach. I find that that often creates mini corners of useable counter space and leaves the chef feeling cramped. Even in a relatively small space, I try to focus on making the cook feel that there's room to spare.

Forget the fancy frills
All those glossy magazines showcase the latest and greatest in systems to keep the inside of your cabinets looking pretty and organized. Pull out pantries, specially fitted spice drawers, custom pot holders, multifunctional lazy Susan's. ... Just say no! No to corbels, dentil moulding, cornices, faux fireplace chimneys, pillars, applied details and faux finishes. This isn't Tuscany or Provence, and there is no need to try to make your kitchen look like your last vacation destination. My rule is simple: If it isn't functional, forget it! Did I also mention that all these decorative bits (which I refer to as "bing bongs" and "gewgaws") don't come cheap? Adding these "fancy" details to your new kitchen will only push the cost higher.

Keep it light
I love bold, dramatic, cutting-edge colours for kitchens. Bring on navy blue, tomato red and tangerine orange. Nothing is more eye-popping and exhilarating than cabinets sprayed in dazzling hues of high-gloss lacquer. But let's face it, most of you are looking for a kitchen that stands the test of time, something that will be a selling feature if you decide to move, and that makes you feel good every time you enter it. For some reason I just can't promise that you'll love tangerine in 10 years, though I wish I were the type of designer who didn't care so that at some point I could test out some of these crazy shades. My need for enduring style and timeless choices guides me to suggest that clients choose a lighter shade of pale for the fixed elements, such as cabinets, and then go nuts with a bold accent colour on the walls that is both inexpensive and easy to change if, by chance, you should find that red walls make you jumpy, irritable and scrappy (before you've even had a sip of morning java).

Do it two ways
Just because it's light doesn't mean it has to be white. Torn between my desire for something new and my need to appeal to the greatest number of people when selling the house, I settled on light, but not white. I chose a pale grey for all the gables, the crown and the open shelves, and did just the door fronts in a pale yellowy cream. During the order process, I think there might have been some eye rolling of the "what is she thinking now?" variety, but, once installed, these two colours pick up the variations in both the counters and the backsplash, and create a very subtle two-tone effect. I can't say it's bold, but it's better than plain old vanilla.

Don't give in to granite
I know granite has a reputation as the practical choice for stone countertops, but I just can't give in to the speckles, the flecks and the golden, pinky hues that this material offers. And dark is way out of the question for me. (If my counters are dirty, I want to see what's on them, please.) I've long used marble (a classic no-no) because I think kitchens should develop a patina like a time-worn French bistro (all counters and bars and table tops are generally carrera white marble with a grey vein). With marble, you have to be willing to live with counters that will develop stains over time. I always made a concession in order to get the look I love, but now there's a new choice for light counters — all hail Caesarstone! This new product is a quartz composite, comes in beautiful designer-approved shades, and won't stain, crack or discolour like natural materials. For my house, I chose "nougat," which has a pale background and sparkly bits of white and pale grey. It's stunning.

Stay connected
The common wish is to have an island, but I find a peninsula is often far more effective, especially when space is an issue. If you are thinking about removing all or part of the wall between the kitchen and dining room, I think the peninsula is the answer. It allows you to create a better division between a more polished dining area and the functional needs of the kitchen space, plus it offers great storage opportunities and, of course, helps to hide the unsightly messes created by the resident chef.

Open and closed
Every kitchen I design has to have a balance of practical storage and pretty display space. I'm a collector of decorative ceramics and glass, so I always like to have some of my treasures on display when I'm in my kitchen. Open shelves are best when used to display a single collection of a single colour as opposed to a catch all for every tchotchke you've ever picked up. Clear glass doesn't do much and shows the dust, so try to stick to sculptural, yet practical pieces that are used on a regular basis (so that the shelves become a functional area for items that are close at hand). In addition to open shelves, I also like some textured glass cabinets, which add a bit of sparkle, yet disguise what lies behind. In my house, I chose wide "reeded" glass and used it so the lines run horizontally instead of the standard vertical. Accent these cabinets with a glittery crystal pendant light and your kitchen will sparkle like a shiny new diamond. Hey, there's no rule saying kitchens can't have a bit of glam factor!

Minimize allowances
The rules say you need 42 to 48 inches to open the refrigerator, dishwasher, oven, or to get around a counter, but I tend to push the limits by reducing the clearance (usually not more than 36 inches) in favour of achieving more counter and storage space. Lets face it, preparing meals is not a group effort in most homes, and there doesn't need to be enough space to choreograph a dance routine. In all my years of pushing the limits, no one has ever complained after their kitchen went in (it only seemed to be a problem on paper).Hardware matters

There are two components to this thought First, don't cheap out on your hardware as it's the final detail, the jewellery of your kitchen. Make sure you choose something you love (as long as what you love isn't the whimsical type of knob featuring flowers, vegetables, or any cutesy motif… motifs are bad). Second, think about whether you really want handles, or whether knobs will do. Handles are often available in more trendy profiles (think of the long bar from a few years ago), but the disadvantage here is that you need to drill two holes to install a handle and only one for a knob. If your tastes change, you can always switch a knob for a different style, but it's not so easy to find an alternative to a handle with the same spacing for screws. Something to keep in mind if resale is on the horizon.

I appreciate your comments about having a long run of counter for prep, however, the sink should be closer to the stove. Cleaning food and then carrying it across the kitchen to the stove is a recipe for water damage on that lovely hardwood floor (and I agree with Tommy that hardwood looks terrific in a kitchen!).

I like the counters and the finsih on the appliances the best. It has a fresh look to it and allows for magnets and the counters won't stain which is great. I like how you incorporated new materials that have benn used a lot. It looks fantastic!

ok, so here we go again, another great looking room by Sarah and Tommy. love the quartz counter top ~ the two tone cabinetry and everything else.

The fabric covered stools really stand out ~ so much more attractive than the brown pleather you see in most stores.
Cool!! Always a fan!

maria,
sounds like what you really want is to change the colour. you don't have to change the cabinet doors! i had the same pink in my house and got a professional painter to come and re-paint all my kitchen cabinets a cream colour. it was absolutely worth it (about $600) and i would recommend this. make sure you get a pro so you can get that perfect smooth finish! good luck.

I had a friend recently share Sarah's furniture prices with me and was very disappointed to see the extremely high numbers. While I will continue to watch Sarah's design shows and be inspired by her brilliant ideas, I have to confess that I am disappointed with her products. There was a time, not so long ago, when Sarah sought to reach and inspire the average person (remember room service). All this fame and fortune has apparently driven her out of our league... Unfortunate.

Sarah, you are my all time favorite designer! I love every single project that you tackle and I have been a fan from the beginning. The first time I saw you was when you were building a frame for a mirror on Savoir Faire. I had a feeling then that you were going places! Living in a small city of less than 50,000 people, it is extremely difficult to find a single decent source for home renovation projects. We certainly don't have any unique or different shopping outlets where to buy things. Home Depot is it! I love this kitchen. It's light and airy, fresh and timeless. If I couldn't live vicariously through your shows every week . . . you may find me hanging from my dated '80's kitchen rafters!

I'm with you Sarah, functional is the way to go in a kitchen. Now what I'd like to know is the process to submit a revolutionary and unique storage solution for the kitchen for your consideration. Our item is inexpensive, functional, easy to install and fits in most kitchens. It's a great idea from Japan where it is in use in 90% of kitchens.

Marble countertop that will stain over the years....I don't think so. If I'm going to put the money and effort into my kitchen countertops I want them to look as good as the day they were installed and not be a collection of stains that I can pinpoint to whatever I was cooking.

Another fabulous success from Sarah!! I absolutely adore everything you do......you're a goddess!!!

We're renovating an entire house right now and I had always thought I wanted a 'traditional' style, but I've evolved since watching Sarah and now am moving more towards a contemporary style. Sarah, you are unique in your approach and keep everything looking and feeling fresh.

Hi Sarah....Loved Sarah from Room Service to Design Inc and as with many designers they are humble when they first start as in Room Srvice she always had projects we could do for our own homes now she is over and above with her deign plans and the amount of money that she spends. In the real world most people don't have those funds available and most are on a tight budget. In all I feel she is an amazing designer but she no longer targets the Average Homeowner.I have thoroughly enjoyed Sarah's House but was very diappointed in the kitchen.I continue to watch Design Inc. and I love Tommy to pieces.

Does anyone know if stucco ceiling a design no no for the basement?
Jen
Wednesday, 06 June 2007 16:21 PM EST
Stucco ceiling in the basement is fine, makes it look less like a basement. We had one in our last house, but when we repaired a plumbing leak, we had to call the pros in to re-stucco. For the past 10 years we've had a 1960 bungalow with a suspended ceiling in the basement. Very handy when we installed an alarm system, a new elect. outlet in the kitchen, a new high efficiency furnace exhaust. How much money did that save us, and how hard is it to get someone to come in and do a small repair job??

Don't give into granite!! no way. We just built our home from the ground up and I'm a designer myself for one of the major companies in our city. Granite is the best it really is. I looks very hot in a kitchen and add alot of character. It is very durable as well. We love it more and more as time goes by. Sorry not so great advice there. Sarah we understand that you dont like granite but to make that kind of comment of what is best is your opinion. I think you should of worded that in a different way. That you personally didnt choose granite however It would be beautiful if one did. I think 98% of people who will read this will dis-agree. If one can afford the investement then they will. If one is a on a very strict budget then maybe they will take your advice. Granite is the 1# choice for interior decorators, even in Italy where I frequented interior decorating school for 5 years. This is coming from the best interior decorators in Europe... which is known for the best interior decorators and best fashion designers... need I say more.

Your kitchen is great - simple but stylish. We have opened up the wall between the kitchen and dining area with a peninsula which works well. We'll have a section of glass doors in one area of our all-white cabinets and add some punch with sunny yellow walls. Keep laughing!

I have noticed a lot of people on this blog have asked about the kitchen appliances' details. On the shopping list it says the appliances are Frigidaire but there are no model numbers. Hi Sarah & Tommy,

I love the timeless quality of the kitchen - all of the rooms you do are clean, fresh and beautifully perfect! We installed marble countertops a year ago and we are very happy with them. We have kids who like to help out in the kitchen and have spilled everything imaginable on them and they are not stained. For me, marble is so classy looking. Love ya Tommy - you are so endearing!

Hi: Sarah, Hi Tommy. Your new home is a gem.I would love to live in it and I would be proud to entertain and have friends in just to give them all a tour of such a pretty home. Some young family will enjoy your hard work, endless shopping, all the things you so kindly thought they would like to have as well as needs.. I don't think you forgot a thing. You didn't let anything slip by you that wasn't properly reinstalled and done from the outside in....The mold was completely removed and again fixed properly for the new owners. Everything was done from the ground (up and down and inside out). Most houses can be repaired and problems ironed out. Sometimes it does take a lot or a little more money.... Your home is well done...The owners will love it for years to come. Please do another renovation...and decorate it as well. The show Sarah's House was enjoyable, and I loved it...You have a lovely baby girl and your husband Alexander. You have this gift of talent. You are truly blessed...Thanks for the enjoyment, the lessons and the interesting shows...What is next? Can't wait to see! Goodluck Sarah...Your Team is wonderful...

The kitchen, bedroom, mudroom laundry room are my favorite rooms.... I think I could really relax in your new home. The colors are soft, and they are not in every home. Something different and easy on our eyes. This lovely home is a great success, but now, what will we watch Sarah? This is fun! Those of us who don't have a budget that is big, will take the cheaper root when it is possible for us and we can copy color and so on. We could purchase items on sale or find something inexpensive that we like, to copy a room that you and Tommy have done. Some renos have to be properly built, using good materials and it costs, but it is worth the expense to do it right and have things look great.... You can find other options as you did Sarah and Tommy. It is good to know, what is the best material when it comes to counter tops and materials that will make the new home reno look expensive and pleasing to most people wishing to reinvent a home or just enjoy living in their new, up to date lovely home. I missed Curb Appeal and the back yard. Will you consider replaying the home reno from the beginning again? Repeat programs are great to watch some times. Thanks, you are both hilarious working together. Talented and funny... Where are the basement pictures? Hope to see them on this web site soon. Great work, great show...May we be surprised again with other projects? We all hope so... Bev

Hi Sarah.
Love all your shows from the beginning to now. I consider myself a Sarah R. junkie.
My comment / question is this:
Why painted MDF on a 70K kitchen?
If we are talking about that kind of money, maybe wood would have been a better value in terms of resale?
Just wondering?

I live in a condo and have a fairly large kitchen and I want to spruce it up on a limited budget. I know a back splash would be great and a new counter top etc. Would a grey/black granite type of counter top be to dark? How do you respond to these comments.

Hi "S" & "T", as all who have written I am much dedicated fan or not only the show but the fun you hve together. Being in the over 50 club, it is almost like I saw "S" growing up from a lovely young talented girl to a married women, with a wonderful family. The idea's and talent you put forth on both your shows, has proven yourself tenfold. I still watch Room Service and love it. Even my husband is an avid fan. We are also planning a kitchen reno sometime in the fall and over the last few years, I've painted our cabinets an antique white with wall color of pale yellow and ceiling a very pale blue. Actually looks not too bad. We have ceramic floors (white with a touch of soft grey) and they are only 3 yrs. old. I am wondering about a new countertop and any suggestion from you would be realllly helpful. Thanks again for all the beauty we see on a regular basis. Congrad on that beautiful daughter of yours. She is a star. Thanks

Hi Sarah and fellow viewers -- I love the show!!! I need some advice for my home and hope someone can share some thoughts/ideas with me. I'm in the middle of a home reno and I'm thinking of cream cabinets and a dark walnut island in my new kitchen. I love the look of the Caesarstone for countertop but I need to know pros and cons... also any advice/feedback on limestone floors in a kitchen? I'm getting so many differing opinions...

Sarah,
After watching your show I visited Ciot to get some info on Caesarstone.I was very disappointed and frustrated by my reception. There was no salespeople present. Apparently you have to buy a kit for $400.00 which gives you names of tradespeople who have been approved to install the product. These people have the prices of the product. There was noone on the list east of Yonge Street and we live in Cobourg It seems if you don't pay 400 dollars you get no info!!

I'm sorry, but i'm with sarah on the granite issue. and where are your 98% supporters?

Laura, do you have a tv show? if so, when is it on? i'd love to see your european style homes - that should stay in Europe.

Maria:Re Cabinets with outdated color.
There is company in Toronto or north of TO that Sarah has used called Benjamen Refinishing, that can spray your cabinets, but it will be with a lacqueur type paint, which will adhere a lot better. You can choose any color and they will color match.

Hi Sarah, love your show but disagree with your opinion on granite. We recently renovated our kitchen, we chose granite, and a backsplash in bronze mirror. The cupboards are two tone, main work area cream & the eating area side in walnut to match the kitchen furniture. The appliances are white & it looks fabulous. I love the granite because it matches the walnut& the cream cabinets, I always know if the counter is clean, because I wipe it down after cooking. We have marble in the bathroom, where staining does not appear to be an issue. Also the granite alternatives? we discovered they were more expensive than the real thing.

Finally a kitchen on a show that not only looks great but works. You could actually really cook in this kitchen and not have to spend hours trying to get it clean again. All those ornate moldings on doors and carved elements may look pretty but what they excell at is collecting huge amounts of CRUD.

Sarah,
I'm in a dilemma! I'm in the mid-process of renovating my kitchen...however, I STILL can't decide what to do for a backsplash!!! The cabinets I ordered are almost an espresso color, and I have darker hardwood floors, with stainless steel appliances....very clean, straight lines thoughout the cabinetry and counters. I'm going with a lighter, neutral color countertop, and I also have a redish-brown chimmney of exposed brick going through the corner of my kitchen. I'm in a panic....got any ideas??

Hello,

Sarah makes good points regarding marble and granite. Marble is a much softer material then that of granite and I would not recommend using marble for a kitchen counter. Usually kitchen counters are high in traffic and marble is likely to dull, stain and scratch in time.

Quartz is a new alternative to granite as it offers style, durability and is resistant to scratches and stains.

My Natural Stone fabrication company is based in Montreal and works with Ceasarstone providers whose quartz is composed of 93% natural quartz.

Multicolor Stonework holds 20 years of Marble, Granite & Quartz experience. For more information please do visit us at www.multicolorstonework.com.

Thank you.

I love the Kitchen such a classic timeless look. I agree neutral helps for resale.
Seeing your kitchen finally help me decide on dark or light cabinetry for our new home we are building. We choose a lovely Parchment colour from Yorktowne Cabinetry.

I agree 100% with Laura. I love Sarah's work as well, of course its question of taste and opinions.

For my part i like the dark chocolate cupboards, with the boxes and mouldings (which i chose for my new house) along with the recess lighting and travertine 12x12 tile floor. Countertop is not even real stone!!! OMG, well stone is not afordable for anyone plus the finish we chose well can put any designer to the test, the quality is great. Maybe well go for stone later, and if we do, it wont be marble, but granit, quartz or mix of epoxy and stone - also called Corian.

Point is that we feel comfortable in the choices that we make since we are the ones living in the house, regadless if its on tv or not.

Sarah, you and your team have inspired alot of the set-up and decorations ideas for our new house and we jsut add some of our own little flavor to it.

Thank you for your ideas and guys keep on the great work :)

sarah, love the show. functionally, i would have preferred you leave the door in the kitchen to the deck. who wants to carry food/drink etc in and out of the dining room? also, i would have liked the small powder room to stay on the main floor. during a dinner party, i wouldnt want my guests to have to go to the basement for these facilities.

Sarah and Team:

I'm a big fan of the show - watch all the time. In your Sarah's House - kitchen episode - I was intrigued by the counter-top material you chose; however, you skipped over it so quickly that I didn't quite catch the name. Fortunately, I found the answer on your website - very useful information! Many thanks for an entertaining and interesting series.

Re Nickel appliances
Try going to a major appliance company like Tasco Distributors or Appliance Canada. Since they specialize in appliances they will be aware of new colours etc. and websites will sometimes be behind on showing colours/models new on the market.
Hope it helps.

Just want to say 'thanks' to Sarah for helping, which way I shud go re countertop choice. Have been in this home for 20 years and its time to upgrade 'my' place. (Not to pat myself on the back, but over the years I've done my fare share of helping family/friends give their places a facelift and finally have decided I shud treat myself.) Sincerely, Sarah is one of the few decorators I wud want (hire) to do a makeover of the home I love so much. Without smoozing (smiles), I can honestly and explicity say, I have loved every project she has done. (Just wished she lived in Ottawa, Ont.)
With appreciation for sharing your knowledge and talent,

Hi!!
Sarah I love you ...and I love that you spray EVERYTHING. But I have a question...(please someone answer!) What kind of paint is it? I tried painting..not spraying...and I did all the "steps": sanding, priming..etc. and its terrible! The paint just scratches write off! So can someone tell me what the difference is between sparying and painting, what kind of base is it and why is it better?!
Thanx a million!

I love this kitchen and am trying to use the same colours in mine... Unfortunately, from the shopping list, I can't figure out what colours were used where. I wish the shopping lists would more specifically list where the paint colour was used. For example, Is "french white" the colour used on the cabinets or on the wall? Or was Ceilo Blaco used on the walls... or is this the colour used on the ceiling? I have the different paint samples here with me but still can't figure it out. If anyone knows, could you please respond on this board. Thank you so much!

You can order the bar stools at a store that carries Sarah's line of furniture. There is one in TO called Hollace Cluny. Otherwise you can find other locations that carry them on Sarah's website itself. I think those particular ones are the "Jake" style. I'm still wondering where to get the fabric from though, if anyone knows, could you please let me know! Thanks.
