Despite constant technological advances, we still scramble to keep track of our daily schedules, birthdays and social events, along with a zillion-or-so computer passwords to bank, pay bills or shop online. So, it’s no surprise we often don’t stop to adjust our thermostat to save a little money and relieve the pressure on our local electrical utility.
That’s why the Ontario Power Authority introduced peaksaver PLUS®, available through most of the province’s electrical utilities. During hot summer weekdays, central air conditioners are running at their maximum and the demand for electricity is at its highest. A few times a summer when there’s very high
demand, your local electric utility may send a signal to your peaksaver PLUS device to
reduce your enrolled appliance’s electricity consumption.
To enroll in peaksaver PLUS:
- Contact your local electric utility to see if peaksaver PLUS is offered in your area.Sign up with your local electrical utility, online or by phone. You’re eligible if you have an account with a participating electric utility and have one of the following appliances: a central air conditioning unit, an electric water heater or an in-ground swimming pool pump.
- A trained technician will come to your home and install a device onto your appliance(s). Your local electric utility may send a signal to the device to reduce your enrolled appliance’s electricity consumption when demand is highest: weekdays during the summer, between 12 noon and 7PM, from May 1 to September 30.
Chances are you’ll never even notice changes to your home, hot water and pool temperature. The majority of peaksaver PLUS participants say the adjustments are so slight, they’re almost imperceptible — but when hundreds of thousands of customers apply them, they make a big dent in the energy usage. The adjustments will last no more than four hours at a time on any given day, and will never occur on a weekend or holiday (when people are more likely to be home).
Better still, enrolment is free and participants can also earn 100 AIR MILES® reward miles.
Right now when you sign up for peaksaver PLUS, you’ll also receive a free in-home energy display. The displays help consumers learn about their energy use. They provide real-time energy consumption information in two ways – units of energy and dollars and cents. More specifically, the energy display shows the amount of electricity being consumed at any particular time, the difference in electricity consumption caused by turning various appliances on and off, and the amount of money that homeowners are spending on electricity consumption, based on current rates. Knowledge really is power: when you know more about your energy consumption, you can better manage your use — and spend less.
The peaksaver PLUS program may not yet be available in all areas of the province. If you would like more information on the availability of the peaksaver PLUS program in your area or to enroll please contact your local electric utility.
