21st Century Ottoman

Materials:

  • Recycled dining table (top of table must have a ‘lip’ or overhang)
  • 5” (12.7 cm) thick foam – cut to size of your table top
  • Vinyl fabric (you will need enough fabric to wrap around the foam and overhang of the table)
  • Ribbon (if desired - to cover staples)
  • Primer
  • Interior Latex paint
  • Jigsaw (alternatives: handsaw or miter chop saw (easiest)), spray glue or constructive adhesive, fine grit sandpaper, cloth/rag, paint brush, paint roller, staple gun, hot glue gun and hot glue sticks, protective eyewear

Directions:

  1. Remove the legs from the table.  Cut down each leg so the table will stand 11” (27.94 cm) high.  Sand the cut end of the legs.  Reattach the legs to the tabletop.
  2. Thoroughly clean and sand the table if necessary. Be sure to wipe any dust off with a wet cloth. Once the table is completely dry, apply a coat of primer on the legs and underside of the overhang only.  Once dry, apply two coats of latex paint (or stain) in your favorite colour.  (There is no need to paint the top of the table as it will be covered with the foam and fabric.)
  3. Use spray glue or constructive adhesive (follow the manufacturers instructions) to attach the foam to the table’s surface.
  4. Stretch the fabric over top of the foam, and staple it to the underside of the table’s overhang. Start by stapling the centre of all four sides and work your way around. Staple the corners last. Make sure the fabric is taut and  that there are no wrinkles.
  5. If you wish, finish the underside (and hide those staples!) by attaching ribbon to the underside of table with a hot glue gun. Our finished table stands 16” (40.6 cm) tall.
