On Backyard Builds, we were working in yards of all shapes and sizes, but the tips and tricks I used in designing those spaces can easily translate to even the smallest of outdoor spaces, like a condo balcony!
First up, measure your outdoor space to ensure you start looking for appropriately-sized furniture. There are a lot of great companies that now offer “Loft Sized” furnishings due to the demand for smaller scale items.
Look for multi-use pieces to maximize the functionality of your space while minimizing the number of furnishings. Ottomans that double as storage, loveseats that house cushions to keep them dry when not in use, and chairs that stack for easier storage in the winter months.
Just because you are living in the “Urban Jungle” doesn’t mean you should give up the green. First, determine the quality of light that your balcony gets throughout the day and then pick your plants accordingly. The taller you go with plants, make sure that your pot is weighted accordingly. You don’t want to be constantly having to right the plant if the wind keeps blowing it over. Vertical wall gardens are my favourite way to add life to a dull balcony. It is great way to liven up a dull concrete wall and also allows the plants to get better access to sunlight. Consider planting herbs alongside other greenery. Not only does it look beautiful but you also have a constant supply of fresh herbs.
Think of the floor. There are great outdoor area rugs that add a lot of character to your balcony. Also, commercial grade carpet tiles can be used on balconies. These are great because you can cut them down to size easily with a utility knife. Also, if you are someone who wants to pull them up during winter months (which you don’t have to) you can stack them and they only take up a 16″ sq foot print.
Lastly, LIGHTING! There are the most amazing LED sting lights available these days. Nothing creates ambiance like some twinkling string lights. Also, consider a light up cube side table. This is a great way to provide a warm glow while also serving double duty as a side table or stool.
