We spend so much of our lives indoors, and so often in one room of our home: the family room, the living room, the kitchen. But there’s a whole gorgeous world waiting outdoors. In each episode of Take It Outside Designer Kelly Deck transforms outside spaces, and lives, by creating spectacular outdoor versions of our most-used indoor rooms. Life as usual, but made better with the fresh air, sunshine and mother nature as a backdrop.
Demystifying the design process each week (a key theme for the series), Kelly takes basic interior design building blocks like seating, lighting, flooring, furniture configurations etc., and adapts them for the outdoors. She cleverly brings the styles and trends of the design world to innovative outdoor rooms, from new ideas in weatherproofing, to stylish outdoor furniture designs. Her personal tips also showcase that transforming underused outdoor spaces is easy and accessible. Key messages and shooting style continually reinforce the philosophy of the show: what is inside can be moved outside – from furniture to lifestyles.
In each voyage of Take it Outside, Kelly meets charismatic homeowners who have a favorite indoor room in which they spend the majority of their at-home time. Whether it’s a kitchen, dining room, kids play space or living room, Kelly recreates an outdoor version that will inspire the homeowners to spend more time outdoors doing all the things they love to do. To encourage homeowners to spend more time outside, the new room must contain the essential design ingredients and practicality of the indoor room.
A tour of the outside space shows Kelly what she has to work with. She returns to the site with her plans, and her Contractor, Stefan, ready to get to work. Throw in a mess of unforeseen reno bumps and surprises and a little “designer shopping trip” for key elements and you have an inside view on how an expert creates a new outdoor space. Throughout the build, Kelly reminds us of the critical building blocks, as well as her inspiration, and we begin to see how these essentials move from ideas to reality.
Finally, in traditional makeover style, the homeowners return to find their outside space transformed. We see beautifully art directed before and after shots as Kelly takes them from inside to out, touring them through the new space, pointing out how their needs have not only been met, but incorporated into a practical, livable and gorgeous space, outside! An outdoor space, and a lifestyle, transformed into one that connects family and friends to nature. Life as usual, but better, because we Take It Outside!
