Mansions

Episode:  Go the Distance

print this

Paul designs an informal mansion with a French country façade, roofline, and multi-toned slate roof tiles. With the tiling well underway, and the exterior ready for the limestone pre-casts, the client wants a couple of changes: scrap the multi-tone and go all black slate, change the roofline, and extend the front façade to make a more formal statement from the curb. Suddenly a couple of changes add up to a substantial re-design: au revoir French country, bonjour sophistication. With French chateaus like Versailles in mind, Paul and Holly jet to Paris to take a closer look. As Paul and Holly stroll the streets of Paris in search of the ultimate architectural inspiration, site supervisor Jim juggles things back home. Paul and Holly finally find that certain je ne sais quoi at Chateau Vaux le-Vicomte, a 17th century gem and original inspiration for Versailles. The final re-design is no small feat and will involve digging down several feet, and out several more around the original foundation in order to extend the façade; incorporating ornate Corinthian columns to the portico; processing enough limestone pre-casts and decorative elements to entirely wrap a 30 000 square foot mansion; and flattening and raising the roofline to make a more sophisticated impression.
