“I take cues from adjectives like modern, vibrant wild, simple, brilliant, bold. Much more evocative than simply wanting a patio or water feature. Feel your space!”

Lorne Hancock’s idyllic weekend afternoon is spent in his garden with his partner and cat, ChuCho. “It’s practical, great for entertaining and relaxing, especially after too much wine!” His vision of a dream garden needs not stray much further, “it would be a place to feel at ease with the world and with yourself; an oasis!”

Lorne’s journey to landscape design echoed that of a wayward bumblebee. Originally he wanted to become a pilot, and when asked what he would do if not accepted into flying school Lorne replied that he would try architecture. “Then I saw an article in a local paper about garden design and that was it!”

The passion Lorne brings to his profession continues to this day. From devising landscapes in a loud, nutty atmosphere to that final “wow” when his design materializes in front of his eyes. “There’s nothing like seeing a drawing come to life. It’s so satisfying!”

Lorne graduated from Ryerson’s Landscape architecture program in 1996. He met James Dale, Kennedy McRae and Joel Loblaw a few years later and joined Earth Inc. as head designer in 2000. He is now a key member of the Dirty Business team.

A Vancouver native, Lorne now lives in Toronto with his partner. In his off time, Lorne enjoys painting, gardening, hitting the gym and traveling.
