“The trade secret to great landscape design is to go vertical. Height gives you the illusion of more space and more design bang for your buck!”

“I asked myself what I would like to do forever when I was 19. Reading design magazines was more to see how a house was situated on the land rather than what it looked like.” For Kennedy, it was a prophetic beginning, “I didn’t even know back then that there was such a profession as landscape design!”

The road Kennedy chose to travel started with a stint as mulch mover at a local arboretum. And he hasn’t looked back, as more and more clients want the most of their mortgage payment inside and out. “Both the easiest and hardest parts of the job are design,” says Kennedy. “But coming up with a kick ass concept that the clients love what I love most!”

A Toronto native, Kennedy graduated from the Humber College landscaping program in 1991. A few years later he met James Dale and Joel Loblaw and went on to set up Earth Inc. in 1997. Lorne Hancock joined as senior designer a few years later. “In my dreams I’m a guitar player, but I get my thrills strumming around a campfire.”

Kennedy leans toward contemporary design, as the materials to achieve the look are limitless. Upon finally mastering this in his own backyard, he moved.

The youngest of six kids, Kennedy lives in Toronto with his wife and three boys.
