“The secret to great design is to go with your first instinct. You’ll always over think it hoping to nail it better but you never do!”

James Dale can’t sit still. He loves traveling, camping, snow boarding, playing hockey, spin classes, biking, painting and building models. In fact, James pretty much single handedly renovated his entire house with his own two hands.

Last on James’ hit list was his own backyard, nothing more than a rotten garage and tangle of weeds. “I think I came up with over 20 designs, none of which came close to my original vision.” James’ dream outdoor space allows him to indulge his creative side, “I can paint out there and have a drawing table to complete gardens I’m working on.”

Born in England, James graduated from Ryerson’s Landscape Architecture program in 1997. Soon after he and classmates Joel Loblaw and Kennedy McRae founded the award-winning landscape design firm, Earth Inc. Lorne Hancock joined the trio as senior designer a few years later. It’s a far cry from James’ first landscape gig, push-mowing three acres of land for five dollars.

Fast-forward a couple of decades and James’ profession has become truly global in nature. “More than ever there is accessibility to plants and stone from around the world.” Added to the daily challenge of finding the best for his clients is the notion that a back or front yard is now seen as an extension of a home’s interior. “It’s now treated the same way as a kitchen was ten years ago!”

When not immersed in the fast-paced landscape lifestyle James spends time with his high school sweetheart wife and their two young girls. They live in Toronto.
