Design, Destroy, Re-Build

Even for a veteran contractor like Bryan, knocking down a house is not as straightforward as it appears. Small delays add up big time – from miscalculating the total amount of waste removal, to obtaining proper building permits. All create extra demands on Bryan who is struggling to get the house’s concrete footings into the ground, a vital first step. At the same time, Bryan is mentoring a new apprentice and struggling to keep his wife Sarah’s lofty housing ambitions to a minimum. Can Bryan control the building of his dream home from spiraling into a nightmare?

Bryan,

Good luck with this HUGE project my friend. I know it will turn out to be the gem of the block. I just hope you're still married at the end of it all! : )

LOL, kidding! I'd be interested to know the budget at the beginning and then how it all "went down" throughout the build.

Cheers and best of luck!

Appreciate your technique & skills. Great watching! Understand the need for filler but tend to stop watching when its not actual building work being recorded; prefer more detail as to ''hows & whys'' when work is carried out. You have great skills teach us more!

SteveB says,

Just watched episode 3, and I'm trying to figure out why Bryan didn't tarp the roof, when it became obvious they couldn't put the shingles on, and there was rain in the forecast. It seems to me a couple of hours work could then have saved several days delay in completing the basement floor.

just curious...

Marita N says,

I love your Disaster DIY show but am not a fan of Bryan's House.
I am sure that most of the 'drama' is done for effect but it should really be called "Sarah's House". Oh, yes, that would conflict with that other design show.

Sunday, 24 January 2010 12:03 PM EST

John Petrocelli says,

Bryan, It was an absolute pleasure to work with you on the pool and hardscapes. I love the show! I would like to say to everyone who watches your show "Bryan is not acting when you see him on TV. He is exactly the same in real life as you see him on TV. He's very down to earth, very funny, and all around a great person". Congratulations Bryan on a beautiful home, a great career and a successful show that I'm sure will be a smash hit. John.

Tim Hovey says,

Hey Bryan, my wife and I are loving the new show, and of course are total fans of D-DIY. Not only are we enjoying it, but my seven year old son Jack is addicted. In the past anytime I began a project he used to say "Dad, you better call Mike" but now it's "Dad, you should call Mike or Bryan"! You know you've made it when...! Now, if I could only convince you to come to the Maritimes - have I got a garage project for you! Keep up the great work, and we can't wait to see your beautiful new home completed.

rob says,

when they did the waterproofing on the foundation they forgot the weaping tile and the dimple producet on the it prevents water penitraiting the wall so a building inspector should cought that

Tuesday, 02 February 2010 22:39 PM EST

Jimmy Gevalia says,

rob, just because it wasn't shown, doesn't mean that it wasn't installed. would you really want to watch the weeping tile being installed? I'd rather they focused on sarah, but thats neither here nor there. As for the dimpled membrane, i don't believe it's code. The foundation was spray foamed.

found the house on google. sarah looks good in her jeans :)

Whats creepy? Anyways, lovely home you have being built there. I'm impressed that it is a nice size and not ridiculous like some in Oakville (and surrounding areas) can be. Nice work. YOu putting a nice home theatre or games room in that basement? Hope so.

Thursday, 04 February 2010 13:35 PM EST

Don Cherry says,

The best show on HGTV. Great work Bryan on building your dream house! Would like to see house in person. DIY is also the best show. I believe that helping people do the practicle work is far more effective than just doing it with a contractor or handy person. People get more out of help and DIY projects than any other show on HGTV.
Keep up the good work Bryan.

Liz Ricci says,

Hi Bryan & Sarah,
I LOVE your show , have not missed one episode. I love your sense of humour Bryan, especially with your wife Sarah, you two are so hilarious together , you guys remind me so...much of me and my husband Gino , he's working on renovating our basement , right now he's working on the bathroom. I'm incharge of the decorating and choosing colour tiles etc, just like Sarah. I'm on Gino's back about everything thing being perfect and I laugh when Sarah says "just get it done dear ", lol..because that's the same thing I say to my husband Gino, that's why I find the show so funny. Bryan I need your help or should I say Gino needs your help to finish the rest of the basement , please help us Bryan!!!! Anyway I wish you both all the best with your new home , its going to look amazing, can't wait to see the finished product, looking forward to next week's episode. GOOD LUCK !!! YOUR BIGGEST FAN LIZ!!

Martin Brodeur says,

Just watching online here in my spare time and to be honest with you, I find the show kind of silly. I haven't really learned anything. Not that I need to. Just think it could be more informative rather than focusing on budget and stuff. Budgets are for the birds. I like to see things being built. Get that Sarah a hammer and let her loose! Got to go to practice now. Big game tonight.

Love your house design and some of the features that have been put into it. I noticed that all the wood is blue. Is this Pine Beetle Denim wood or has it been treated with a product to make it water and mold resistant?

Just like to know what the white material was that you used in the bathroom with the vertical coloured accents. Looks like large sheets of some type of stone, quite nice and if i saw it right minimal joints visible.

Michelle says,

Bryan, why did your basement leak? Have you fixed it yet?

Sunday, 21 March 2010 22:13 PM EST

Adam Weir says,

The basement leak happened on a weekend when we had 5 or 6 thunderstorms roll through. The roof was on, windows were in, and everything was going OK until the power went out in the middle of the night. By the time Bryan could get to the house and get the generator running it was too late. Not a good day!

Watched this show for the first time tonight. Which is strange as I am a HGTV addict. I won't watch it again. Bryan you are all about "your money". Unbelievably rude and sarcastic to your wife. I will turn the channel next time you come on.

Monday, 29 March 2010 02:47 AM EST

Cathie says,

I love the House of Bryan show, and I have always been a fan of DIY. I think Sarah could be nicer to Bryan because he is doing all the work and she is just spending the $$. Cut the guy some slack - Sarah - Bryan works hard. Sarah kind of drives me crazy.

Ron Horner says,

Hi Bryan and Sara! I love the show and I have seen all of the episodes. I particularly like your protege Adam. I was very surprised to see him as I also saw him on an episode of the "cottages" that you did.I am sure you remember that episode because he was running a water boarding camp!Anyway the house looks great and it must have been very difficult to build your steamshower completely out of "soapstone".

Thursday, 15 April 2010 21:21 PM EST

Adam Weir says,

The steam shower was a lot of work! But the guys at Canadian Soapstone made it look easy!! canadiansoapstone.com

his wife makes me physically ill. all she cares about is herself. she does nothing the entire time, complains about everything, keeps buying tons and tons of stuff using his money.. and gets a pool out of it.

Thursday, 23 December 2010 11:09 AM EST

AJ says,

Thanks Adam - that list was helpful but it doesn't talk about the stairs. I have heard that putting the exact same flooring on the stairs is not appropriate so I am wondering if Bryan used solid treads and stained them to match (smooth) or solid treads that he had distressed and stained to match the floors. Thank you!

Thursday, 23 December 2010 13:32 PM EST

Adam says,

Stairs were solid oak treads stained to match, stairs were from Royal Oak Stairs

Tuesday, 28 December 2010 22:43 PM EST
