Need a place to store blankets, magazines, and remote controls that clutter up your living room? Clear the mess with this do-it-yourself project plan for a coffee table with built-in storage space.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • 4’ x 8’ sheet of MDF (3/4” thick)
  • 4-“L” brackets
  • Carpenters glue
  • Stoppers for coffee table legs
  • Screws: Flat Robertson #8 (2” and 1 ½”)
  • Hardware mechanism to make tabletop rise
  • Latch

CUT LIST

  • Top of coffee table: 21 ½” x 40”
  • Outside of legs: 21 ½” x 17”
  • Inside of legs: 21 ½” x 12 ¼”
  • Middle of legs: 2” x 12 ¼”
  • Front and back panel: 4 ¾” x 38 ½”
  • Bottom: 20 x 38 ½”
  • Shelf: 20 x 35 ½”

INSTRUCTIONS

Construction of Shelf:

  1. Laminate all three outside/inside/middle cuts of MDF together in order to give each leg the thickness of: 2 ¼”.
  2. Lay down the outside of the leg (21 ½” x 17”), glue and attach the middle pieces (2”x12¼”).
  3. Glue and attach the inside of leg (21 ½” x 12 ¼”).

Construction of Shelf:

  1. Attach the front and back panel and bottom to the legs.
  2. Using “L” brackets, attach the bottom shelf to the legs.
  3. Prime and paint all surfaces.
  4. Attach hardware inside the table and to the tabletop.
  5. Attach latch to tabletop and to the front of the table to keep the top/lid closed.
