Enlarge existing door opening if desired (in this case we wanted 34”x84”)
Order a Maple (or Birch) slab door that is 1” taller and 1” wider than your opening.
Fill wall cavity with scrap 2x3 material to fasten the new door jamb to.
Use the table saw to rip door jamb from maple sheet material. It must be wide enough to cover not only the wall thickness, but also the wall cladding (i.e. 4 ½” wide)
Cut ‘shoulders’ into the door jamb header for the jamb sides to fit securely into. Insert this into the opening this using shims to make it plumb and screws to hold it in place.
Hang your door using premium sliding door hardware designed specifically for this type of application.
Apply Maple (or Birch) trim around entire wall. Be sure to allow 1” overhang for the wall cladding. Screw trim into place.
Fill all screw holes with precut 3/8” maple plugs. Sand smooth.
Apply one coat of clear urethane. Allow to dry fully.
Sand.
Finish with another coat of clear urethane.
