Project Plan

This elegant walnut console can be mounted on a flat wall or between two pillars. Frosted glass lets you hide mismatched tabletop pieces, books or board-games.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Table Saw
  • ¾” Walnut Veneer
  • Wood Glue
  • Clamp
  • Solid Edge Banding
  • Sandpaper
  • Plastic Tracking
  • Biscuit Joiner
  • Biscuits
  • Masonite (for test doors)
  • Clear Urethane
  • Glass
  • Drill
  • Studs
  • Screws

INSTRUCTIONS

Use the table saw to cut ¾” walnut veneer material slightly larger than your finished panels.

Glue and clamp the Veneer to the panels to form 1 1/2” thick panels. Let dry fully.

Cut to exact dimensions.

Glue on solid edge banding, clamp in place and let dry fully.

Sand and smooth.

Use the table saw to cut rabbits in the top of the floor panel and the underside of the top panel. These will accommodate the sliding panel track. (It is recommended that you do several tests on scrap material to get the exact dimensions required. The plastic track should be a tight press fit)

Use the table saw to cut miters for the corners. Use a biscuit joiner and biscuits to fasten corners together. Glue, clamp and let dry.

Once all your panels are assembled, cut and install the plastic track in the pre-cut rabbits on the top and bottom.

Cut dummy panels from ¼” masonite for the doors (this dimension is crucial). Once you have a good fit, order glass using the pre-fitted masonite as a template.

Finish the wood with three coats of clear urethane and let dry fully.

Fasten legs to underside.

Secure console to the wall by fastening to a stud.

Install glass panels.

DESIGN NOTES

To avoid improperly fitting sliding panel track, do several tests on scrap material to get the exact dimensions required.

The plastic track should be a tight press fit.

To ensure properly fitting glass doors, cut dummy panels using masonite first and use these as a template for the glass.
