Project Plan

Give an easy face-lift to your house or apartment wall. Bring depth and character to a plain wall with MDF strips of different lengths and personalize with with your favourite paint colour.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Measuring Tape
  • Sharp Pencil
  • Level
  • 6” MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) Strips
  • Table Saw
  • 180 Grit Sandpaper
  • Construction Adhesive
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Primer
  • Paint

INSTRUCTIONS

Carefully measure the wall.

Locate any fixtures such as light switches or plugs that will need to be placed in the center of a board. Use these as reference points for laying out you horizontal lines.

Use a level to draw horizontal lines all the way up to the ceiling from these reference points.

Use a table saw to cut enough 6” MDF strips to cover your wall.

Sand walls and ‘ease’ corners with 180 grit sand paper.

If possible, lay out pieces on the floor to mock up the look you want.

Remove the base board and ¼ round to allow for a full wall treatment.

Going from top to bottom, use construction adhesive and nails to secure each piece to the wall

Prime and paint to desired colour.

DESIGN NOTES

The wall used in the episode is 8’x 18’ and therefore needed 144 sq. feet of MDF strips.

Three different thicknesses of material(1/2”, ¾,” and 1”) were used to achieve the desired texture. MDF can be bought in 1” thickness or two ½” pieces can be glue lamed together.

Use MDF pieces of varying length and thickness to give the appearance of a random but balanced overall texture.
