Episode 7: The Winner Is Crowned!

O.K.  This is what happened on our last day of taping.  Mike T., the electrician who almost electrocuted Mike Holmes last year showed up.   Kevin Howe, the winner of Handyman Superstar Challenge Season II showed up.  And Austin Powers showed up.  Just so everyone realizes … I didn’t notice I was dressed like Austin Powers until I was already on the set and shooting so I couldn’t go home and change.  I just want to reiterate that I do realize I looked like Austin Powers and if you want to laugh at me, that’s fine.  I agree.  I looked like Austin Powers.  O.K. now let’s move on.  I should make note that shooting this final challenge is always boring for anyone who isn’t working a camera or building something.  There’s a lot of sitting around and just thinking about stuff.

For instance, I spent a great portion of the day wandering around wondering how Mike Holmes found girls who look like that to expertly use power tools.  They were like freaks of nature.  I mean that in the kindest way of course.  Like … imagine finding a guy who could expertly use power tools but also discuss Dostoyevsky at length while grating carrots for a gourmet meal on his washboard stomach.  Kind of the same thing.  Turns out he actually bred one of the girls. She’s his daughter.

Another thing I did to pass the time was talk to Mike and Jim.  Who were also kind of sitting around bored for a portion of the day.  Turns out … our little chats were very informative.  Got some practical information out of the boys.  And here it is in random order:

  1. (from Mike)  If you’re ever doing your own home renovation on a largish scale, ask for a contractor’s discount.  The hardware/lumber store should give you 20% off.  Last summer I redid my whole backyard and this little trick saved me more than $1,000.

  2. (from Jim)  Clean your gutters not once, but TWICE a year.  Once before the leaves fall, and once after.  Also, put three foot extensions off your downspouts so they drain away from the house.

I asked both Mike and Jim what four tools they think someone moving into their first house should have are.

Mike:  Cordless Drill, Multi Screwdriver, Level, Hammer

Jim:    Drill, Multi Screwdriver, Needle Nose Pliers, Hammer

I asked both Mike and Jim what is the best wood for crown moulding.

Mike: Poplar.  No question about it.
Jim: MDF Medium Density Fiberboard). No question about it.

So that clears that up.  Mike also had two words of advice on doing any renovation.  Number one: Never pay cash.  Now, I know that goes against everything we as consumers believe in with regards to avoiding paying taxes, but if there’s no record of payment … there’s no way to get that payment back if something goes wrong with the renovation.  Secondly, obtain a permit!  You may think you got away with something if you have work done without bothering to get a permit, but if you ever try to sell your house you might be in trouble.  Especially when the potential buyer asks to see the permit for the slightly slanty, kind of leaky addition you and your friends put on.

And finally … my little piece of advice to all of you … if Mike Holmes ever offers you hot sauce, politely decline.  And be firm about it.
Congratulations to all of this years’ contestants and especially to our season four winner: Jason Best.

Since i am too technical for the Universe, I am just going to say congrats Jason. With a last name like that, you knew he was going to win. But as good as he is / was, i must learn to be even more too technical for the universe.

Michael says,

Enjoyed the show very much.
Did not always agree with the judges.
Congratulations to Jason your personality and skills won it for you.
Conor your work was excellent and Jesse you
made things smaller but done very well.

KGD says,

Congratulations to Jason for winning, but I don't think he should have won. Through the whole show, Mike was saying, "you don't have to be great at one thing, you have to be good at alot of things to be the handyman superstar" That being said, in the Obstacle course episode, Jason could not break a piece of glass, hung his door upside down, and could not do the hardwood floor very well, which a handyman should be able to do.

I agree with KGD....Jason did great, & congrats...But, I believe Conor was the best handyman in the competition. That being said all 3 were very close at the end. Great work guys!!
Oh well, I guess they need a winner from Ontario..they certainly don't have a hockey team.

DC says,

Congrats Jason, Jesse and Connor! and everyone else that put themselves out there to showcase their skills and complete on national television! Not as easy as it looks from the couch was it?!

Conor from C.C. Woodcraft says,

I would like to say thanks to all my fans for their support and congratulations to all contestants. It was a great experience that I will never forget. Good Times...

For the nine of us that did not win, remember this. A good handyman should never have to sell himself or his work. Your reP***tion should proceed you and your quality of work will speak for its self. "Salesmen are for used cars"

Cheers boys

P.S. HGTV when does the allstar edition start?

How about bringing back the top 3 from all

Taj Camper 2 says,

You may be correct Conor that "Salesman are for used cars", however, a handyman with personality will beat one with arrogance everytime!

I really enjoyed this season and was glad to see Jason win. I was, however disappointed in Conor's remarks about each of his competitiors. I guess it did show his true side and the right man did win!

Connor got shafted big time. Jason can sell more. But how did he not go in the bottom three for that cabinet thing he half ass put together, he used like 3 sheets of plywood in 2 hrs. gimme a break.

Jamie says,

Just watched a repeat of episode 1, and I noticed one of Mike's test questions was wrong. He asked Cathy how many wires were attached to a 3 way switch. She answered 4 and he said correct. That is wrong. Its 3. There are 4 wires going to the box, but the 4th is the ground and it connects to the box itself, not the switch. Google it and you can find all sorts of diagrams showing the switch has 3 screws for the wires.

Tri2win says,

What's the point of having a showdown with the bottom three if the results are going to be ignored?
I agree with Steve, when he built the best steps by far, then got skewered by an indecisive Caruk and Holmes when they took into account previous work.
"BullS***!" I believe he commented, a description of this injustice to which I concur 100%

Hey Bob, have you forgotten about the obstacle course episode when Steve did the worst job on the bricks but was saved because the judges took into account previous work?

Melisa, you're wrong! Seems to me Jesse beat Conor all competition long.

The Toilet Guy says,

Can you people please stop your bashing?? As a contestant I can assure you that the editing of the show has slanted your veiw. The pressure on that set is unexplainable, Mike Holmes has a rare ability to make you speak your confidence.Try tying your shoe laces in 5 seconds and imagine what it's like with Jim Caruk and Mike Holmes watching. Now add in the camera's on national television. So please stop bashing my crew. !! Was it fair?? Who cares, It's Show-Biz. !!

Friday, October 09, 2009 8:39 PM

mike graham says,

I think there should be name change for the show. I think a true handyman can do more than wood work. there should be a challange to see who knows more about everything, plumbing, electrical, drywall and finishing. heating, gas lines, If one of them can do all the above they are a true handyman

I agree that large renovations that affect the structure of your home, including decks, should always have a permit. However there are many small handyman jobs that just don't make sense.

Shelley Howell says,

Just wan't to know how you enter to be in the Handy man superstar challenge, cuz I have the man that knows his construction and I think he could win this, he is from Barrie,Ont.

Friday, March 19, 2010 1:42 AM

Sandi says,

I was watching the episode where 4 groups of 2 guys had to finish a room in 3 hours(hang drywall, mud, trim, floor, baseboard and some kind of hearth for the FP). You let the two guys who did the best work go. It seemed to be based on Shasta not liking them. I don't care what kind of personality you have orif you are charming or not. I care about the work you do. I think Shasta should go.
