Sarah Richardson's
Sarah Richardson started her television career 15 years ago as a prop stylist & set decorator. When an acquaintance from university called her to work behind the scenes on a home focused show, she jumped at the chance to get paid for her creative flair and enthusiasm for all things home and design. After honing her skills behind the camera, Sarah explored the on–camera side of the lens, and never looked back. She launched her HGTV series Room Service 10 years ago, and has added 3 more hit shows to her repertoire: design inc., Sarah's House, Sarah's Cottage (and a brand new series, Sarah 101, will air in January 2011). Outside of her TV life, Sarah runs a high–demand business, Sarah Richardson Design, and has her own paint and furniture lines. She has plenty of "I love my job days" and keeps it all in balance by spending her off–camera time with her young family and terrific friends.

What or who is your biggest design influence in your life?
Sarah: From an early age, it was my mom. She was my biggest design influence. She inspired me with her creativity. I think that if my mom were doing what I'm doing now, if she started her career at a different time, I think she'd be doing something more like what I'm doing. So I kind of think that I'm doing it for both of us!
What drives you to get up each morning?
Sarah: There is a whole world of design out there and there's new challenges. I don't need anything to drive me to jump out of bed. I think I have the best job and absolutely love what I do. The days go by so quickly, I never look at my watch. I look at my watch only to think uh-oh how much time is left to get done what I want to do. I never think about it in terms of is this day over yet? So I think that time flies and I am always excited for what lies ahead. You never know what will happen on any given day.
What do you want to be remembered for?
Sarah: I'd like to be remembered for thoughtful design. I'd like to be remembered for doing something that was original and creative. I want solutions that last, that are meaningful and that make people happy.
What is your favourite new trend that you think actually has some staying power?
Sarah: I don't know if we can call it trend, I hope it's a direction – accountability for the use of resources. Whether it's energy or how items are made, where they come from. A global awareness of what you're using, where it came from, and what needed to happen to create it or what needs to happen to dispose of it. If we're all aware of all of the elements that go into everything we use and come in contact with on a daily bases, we're on the right track.
What would your dream career be if you weren't an interior designer?
Sarah: OK. So my dream career would always be something creative. But it doesn't have to be strictly interior design. I think that all of the facets that surround creativity, whether it's fine art or pursuing a career in photography, anything that embodies the creative process would fulfill me.
