B.C., Quebec and Ontario are going to miss gloating over having one of the world’s coolest design retailers studding their lineup of home decor stores: West Elm is coming to Calgary, Alberta. Joining Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, the new 9,000-square-foot Calgary store is slated to open on August 20.
Based in Brooklyn,NY, much of West Elm’s success can be attributed to making design fun and easy, while providing its customers with unique, affordable home furnishings and accessories that “mix clean lines, natural materials and handcrafted collections from the U.S. and around the world.”
Along with the store’s signature assortment of Fair Trade Certified, handcrafted items, West Elm will also be partnering with six Calgary artists and craftspeople as part of the retailer’s LOCAL initiative, such as local soap-makers, the Medicine River Soap Co.
Seeking out locally sourced products for its different locations is what helps West Elm live their company philosophy of creating a positive impact on the environment, as well as the local community within which each store is situated.
West Elm’s Calgary store will feature “distinct design elements and mindfully sourced materials,” notes the company’s announcement, including flooring made from reclaimed oak skin planks that have been arranged in a chevron design, and a ceiling that boasts salvaged tin tiles that have been sand-blasted in order to show off the original patina.
Upon entering the store, shoppers will be greeted by a front checkout area that whimsically incorporates a combination of different doorknobs, showcased in salvaged lathe slats.
West Elm’s Calgary location will celebrate its grand opening on August 20 with a special promotion: the first 300 shoppers who make a minimum purchase of $50 will receive an exclusive tote bag designed by Calgary-based illustrator Alison Hui of The Paper Lover Co.
