"Alfresco" dining set, Crate & Barrel, approx. $2,200
I have been looking. Boy, have I been looking. I mentioned earlier that my friend and neighbour is on a mad tear to find a set ASAP, and I have been lending my detective services to help. Needless to say, I’ve been steeped in enough wicker, cast aluminum, iron, teak and Craigslist, to last me a thousand summers.
You may have noticed that we’ve been quite preoccupied with patio furniture here on Style Sheet of late, but you know why? Because many, many, many of us need it, and it’s stingingly expensive!
The best deals I’ve found have indeed been private resale, on sites such as Kijiji (Toronto-based) and Craigslist, but if you think you’ll pick up a set for garage-sale prices, you’re in for a surprise. The going average for a 5-9 pc. wood or metal set in good condition is $450-$600!
New, the best deal has so far been from PC Home — 9 pc. for $399 — but it’s certainly not to everyone’s taste, and for approx. $200 more you can look to the new Martha Stewart line at Home Depot for more choices (the only thing is, the stuff is quite large, and not a great fit for city postage-stamp yards or tower balconies.)
IKEA has mysteriously not yet unveiled its patio line, and specialty outdoor decor stores are just totally out of my reach — running you in upwards of $1,000. Maybe Pier 1?
I, of course, have a rusty vintage ’50s set moping around my muddy yard, which I feel may have come to the end of its journey. But I’m just not ready to part with hundreds of dollars! I’m anxious just thinking about it. Spring is definitely here, and I’m backed into a costly corner.
How much would you or have you spent on patio furniture? Please, we need to commiserate.
