The “Anglepoise” lamp was a true original in its day — which was 1932. A feat of design, the lamp deployed specially functioning springs, hitherto not invented. Although incredibly useful and high-functioning as a reading lamp (or for other task lighting), until recently this type of lamp was seen as a bit too “officey” for the home. No longer: Let’s welcome this marvellous little lamp into our living, eating and cooking spaces!
The Splurge: Original 1227 desk lamp, Anglepoise; £149
The Steal: Swing arm desk lamp, Canadian Tire; $19.99
A little bit of “desk chic” can really tone down an otherwise very feminine or luxurious room — and an anglepoise-style lamp is a joy to read under. As extra task lighting over a food-prep area, this lamp does the trick with understated cool.
I once came across several of these lamps tied together to create the most whacked-out ceiling fixture I’ve ever seen. But I’ll save that for another blog entry.
