Wallpaper is back and better than ever! This time around, get inspired to use the crop of modern papers in fun and innovative new ways.
The Layered Look
Define your living space with a layered wallpaper look. Use neutral wallpaper across all of the walls in the room and follow-up with a second pattern in a matching colour or equally neutral tone, half-way up from the floor. You can cut out the top design to add even more visual interest and a faux chair rail effect.
A Channel of Panels
Plain doors can get a personality jolt with wallpaper panels. Paint the doors to match your walls or in a complementary colour, then measure and apply a rectangular panel of wallpaper to the middle as you would to a wall. Depending on the style you’re going for, you can further the look by adding one-inch quarter round around the edge of the paper. It’s a funky alternative to authentic, paneled doors.
Many new types of wallpaper allow you to add your own personal touch for a truly individual style! One such paper includes the very popular photograph wallpaper that features a pattern of geometric lines that create rectangular spaces left open for your own pictures. Other wallpapers are actually designed so that you can paint on top of them with a wash of paint or even stamps.
Cut it Out
It may sound like something you did in elementary school, but cutting out large-scale patterns and using them to highlight or visually anchor objects on the wall is a very modern way to use wallpaper. A fleur-de-lis, flower or damask pattern could act as a mat for hooks or wall sconces. Another way to interpret wallpaper in your home is to use it as a headboard or mural. Measure a long width of wallpaper and apply it to the wall behind a bed as a trompe l’oeil headboard or perhaps above a hall table in lieu of a painting. This is especially effective in a small space where you don’t want to add any visual bulk to the room.
Off the Wall
With so many new and innovative patterns cropping up, decorators are now using wallpaper to cover bookcases, end tables, as well as framing it as art and having it inlaid into trays. You can use wallpaper to highlight any object to give it new life and style!
