While it should come as no surprise that the managing editor of HGTV.ca is a home body, I’m also an avid traveler, and relish the opportunity to pack up and explore new places and cultures.
That being said, I’m not one to give up the comforts of home while abroad, and have a few tricks up my sleeve for making everything from hostels to hotels and home stays as cozy as my own home (which, interestingly enough, is in a hotel, but that’s a story for another blog post).
I’m writing this in advance of my departure, but by the time you all read this I’ll be hiking the Swiss alps, chowing down on fondue, and learning the fine art of yodeling. At the end of each day abroad, I’ll be curling up with the comforts of home. Take a peek at my must-haves for creating a home away from home.
I have a few go-to scents that you’ll always find (or rather, smell) in my Toronto apartment and I’ve begun buying travel-friendly sizes to bring along on vacations. A familiar scent can bring a huge amount of comfort when you’re feeling homesick (not to mention minimize unfortunate odors in hostels).
I’m a huge fan of the Diptyque Travel Candles.
Hotels tend to be chilly, so a pair of slippers is a must. Plus, they’re so homey! I’ve brought my moccasins to cottage weekends with friends and they’re always the envy of every guest.
These plush, lightweight Restoration Hardware slippers are a must.
Hotels usually offer a few tea bags and instant coffee in rooms, but there’s nothing quite like waking up to your preferred brew. Stash a few tea bags in your carry on and you’ll be set.
DavidsTea Travel Tins are perfect for a spot of tea on the go.
I never visit a destination without finding my way to a farmer’s market. From delicious local foods to interesting handmade goods, they’re always a treasure trove of souvenirs and keepsakes to find, not to mention a few fresh blooms to brighten my hotel nightstand.
If you’re used to background tunes at home, there’s no reason you can’t bring them along on your vacation. There are tons of amazing travel tech options that take up little space and won’t push you over your weight limit.
The Qube Speaker by Matrix Audio is an awesome and stylish option.
