Holiday Table Setting: Art Deco Glam

By Stephanie Saunders

This table-setting is for a midnight New Year’s eve dinner lit only by the sparkle of candle-light with flowing champagne that never runs dry. The Great Gatsby himself would approve!

Tricks and tips:

A Gatsby theme is all about the fun and frivolity of 1920s Art Deco and even though the theme is retro, you can mix in new fashion-inspired pieces that update the look. I started my design with gorgeous black and gold vintage china and added floral accent plates by Kate Spade for a hit of modern style.

Don’t be afraid to mix metallics: there aren’t any steadfast rules that apply to gold vs silver in this style so feel free to mix it up. In my design, the gold-rimmed plates go very well with the silver flatware and accessories.

Seashells and fans are very big in Art Deco and you’ll notice both in the table design. When decorating with a motif, make sure that all of the chosen pieces have complimentary detailing.

Can’t find the perfect tablecloth? Why not make your own from a few yards of fabric? This fan-printed silk was so perfect for the theme that I knew I would never find anything more perfect. It’s up to you whether or not to hem - and really, who would notice in a candle-lit room? If you can’t find a perfect print, gold silk or white linen would also work well.

Keep the flowers simple and neutral. I like the Casablanca lilies that we used here but Calla lilies or white roses would also be beautiful. It’s up to you how many and how big to make the centerpiece- just remember that low is best.

Adding sparkle is essential to any holiday table. I used Kate Spade Christmas ornaments as place card holders but you can also use vintage broaches to get a similar effect.
