When it comes to making holiday ornaments, felt is one of my favourite materials to use. Felt sheets come in an endless array of colours and with a hot glue gun and scissors, the possibilities are endless! This tutorial will show you how to make these cute DIY tree ornaments.
DIY
Materials
- Sheet of green felt.
- Sheet of brown felt.
- Hot glue gun.
- Scissors.
- Embroidery thread.
- Embroidery needle.
STEP 1: Felt it
Using your scissors, cut five circles out of the green felt sheet. Cut your largest circle approximately 4” in diameter and the rest of them slightly smaller. When your circles are complete, cut a triangular shape out of the circle so that it resembles a lily pad.
STEP 2: Glue and roll
Create a cone shape by rolling your felt circle and applying a strip of hot glue to the edge to secure the cone shape in place. Do this to all of the circles.
STEP 3: Needle and thread
Thread your needle with a piece of embroidery floss and string the thread through the top cone (your smallest of the five cones) and back through the bottom, leaving enough thread behind to create a loop for hanging your ornament. Knot your thread to secure it from inside the bottom of the cone (you will need to make your knot large enough so that it doesn’t slip through the top of the cone).
Stack your felt cones on top of one another, glueing one on top of each other as you stack. Your stack of cones should now resemble a tree!
STEP 4: Sturdy trunk
Cut a 4” x 2” rectangle out of your brown felt sheet. Simply roll the felt rectangle to make the tree trunk. Apply a strip of hot glue to the edge of the felt to secure the roll. Apply a dab of hot glue to the inside of your bottom tree cone and stick the trunk to the dab of glue.
Have fun playing with various sized circles and the amount you use!
Use these ornaments as gift toppers or stocking stuffers. Heading to a dinner party? Hang an ornament around the neck of a bottle wine or around the top of a jar of jelly and you have a perfect gift for your host!
