5 Colourful DIY Projects for the Bedroom

86506329While there’s no denying neutrals provide a peaceful palette, creating a calming room to rest your head doesn’t mean it needs to be devoid of colour. These five bedroom DIY ideas will add a splash of colour to any slumber space without sacrificing those precious Z’s.

1. Make a Studded Polka Dot Throw Pillow: Add some wow to that wall of white throw pillows piled up on the bed. Polka dots are one pattern that never goes out of style, and since they don’t take up much surface space, they’re a great way to add a dot of colour to a bedroom. All that’s needed is a plain throw-pillow case, a package of coloured brads (or use nail polish to paint individual brass brads) and steady hand. Poke the brads through the fabric (and bend the backs flat) to make a grid pattern of pretty polka dots or go freehand for a more original design.

Try: Ektorp Lumbar Cushion, $24.99. Available at IKEA Ikea, and American Crafts Elements Olive Medium Brads Pack, $3.99. Available at Amazon

2. Paint a Faux Headboard: Brighten up that boring box-spring bed by painting a fake headboard on the wall behind it — it gives the illusion of having a colourful headrest without all the assembly headaches (or high cost). Using a tape measure and a level, tape the section above the bed you wish to paint in. Remember, real headboards go a little bit beyond the mattress so make sure to add 2-4” on either side. Pick a high-gloss paint (for durability and shine), and roll on two coats of colour for that instant headboard.

Try: Stanley FatMaz Tap Measure, $26.29. Available at Canadian Tire

3. Apply Wall Decals: One of the easiest ways to add colour to a bedroom, without too much fuss or draining the bank account, is by applying a stunning wall decal. The variety of the designs out there is staggering, from simple strips of colour to intricate nature scenes — there really is something for everyone. You can even make your own! Just peel, place and stand back to admire your handiwork.

4. Create a Cloth Canopy: Making a colourful cloth canopy is a surefire way to feel like royalty every time you walk into your sleeping chamber. Most home-decorating stores have a cloth-by-the-roll section, so pick up a few metres of vibrant material, a couple of curtain rods (sew a fold at each end of the fabric to slip the rods through, securing them to the ceiling) and voila, a piece of overhead artwork that’s fit for a king and queen.

Try: Marimekko Unikko Fabric, Available at EQ3and Matte Nickel Curtain Hardware Sets, $37.38. Available at Crate & Barrel

5. Turn Chairs into Tables: Mismatching antique chairs can easily be repurposed into a pair of colourful bedside tables with a bit of elbow grease, a few coats of paint and couple of decorative trays. Garage sales and antique markets are great places to find individual vintage chairs selling for a song. Sand down the rough edges, prime, and paint each chair the same smile-inducing colour (trying pulling a colour from a favourite duvet cover or throw pillow). To complete the chair-to-table transformation, pop a couple of complementary-coloured trays on top of each chair to keep that bedtime reading and glass of water stylishly secure.

Try: Square Lacquer Trays, $24.96 each. Available at West Elm
