When do collections of tchotchkes and figurines become unsightly clutter? Jill Pollack, host of HGTV’s new show Consumed, which helps regular folks break the cycle of messy clutter and household disorganization, is pretty clear on the subject. You only need to see her facial expression in this interview to know she’d rather your shelves be put to better use. Why then do so many persist?
Things I think are worth collecting, because they either look good on display, or can be easily stored and enjoyed out of sight:
Vintage Clothing (and shoes)
Xmas tree ornaments
Matryoshkas (because they’re irresistible)
It’s a short list, I admit. Have you seen a collection of the kind Jill refers to — namely “little bears and figurines” — that has a positive aesthetic effect on the space it occupies? If so, do tell! Because I dare say, I have not.
