Hot Tubs: Yea or Nay?

Posted by Krystal DSouza Friday, July 11, 2014 10:30 AM EST

My automatic response to this question was yea! I mean, who wouldn’t want to hop into their own personal hot tub after a long day at work? After doing a bit of research though, I’m not so sure...

According to Pool and Spa News, IBISWorld estimates a 13 per cent growth on the international purchase of hot tubs annually leading up to 2018. Canada alone accounted for almost five per cent of the industry revenue in 2013, with Mexico coming in at a close second.

This, however, is only half the story. While the annual revenue is rising, many that already own them are having serious regrets. Bloggers all over the internet are calling hot tubs novelty items, stating that the novelty wears away soon after the purchase once maintenance begins.

Hot tub maintenance is a weekly chore. Bromine needs to be added to keep the water sanitary, the pH balance can be disturbed easily by beauty products, the calcium hardness has to be maintained, and the water itself has to be changed a few times a year. Not complying to all of these prerequisites can turn your hot tub into a breeding ground for a variety of different bacteria that can cause severe infections and even disease.

What do you think? Are hot tubs novelty items? Are they worth all the time and effort? Let us know in the comments below!
