Top 5 Friday: Flooring and Rug Trends for 2012

When my husband and I were picking colours for our pre-construction condo nearly two years ago, the flooring was one of the biggest point of contention. It was the battle of light vs. dark and at the end of the day we kept it light. We've got a small space and I'm happy we went with the light floors.

Now that we're all moved in I've been spending a lot of time looking for rugs to give a little colour to my space. So, with all my focused efforts on floors, I thought I'd bring you my Top 5 flooring and rug trends for this year.

Layering
If you've found a rug you love, but it just doesn't fit in the space you want to put it, layer it. Frame up a colourful rug with a neutral backdrop to frame the space.

DIY
For those of you who crochet, maybe a rug can be your next project. Or, for those of you who are less crafty (like myself), this braided rug tutorial is a great way to add something fun and original to your decor.

Light & Bright
Instantly brighten your space this year and go for lighter wood shades when choosing new flooring.

Herringbone
Stealing from Emma Reddington's trends post last week, I fully agree with a trend toward herringbone flooring. If you're looking to put some investment towards new floors this year, do something classic and timeless like this!

Upcycled
Reduce, re-use, recycle, right? And that's no different for flooring. People will seek out more upcycled wood flooring products in 2012.
