There are countless ways in which we can all contribute to helping our environment. When it comes to design, this translates into a common desire to bring the outdoors in and indoors out, and embrace the natural elements in our surroundings.

To that effect, a friend of mine has been redecorating her home and drawing inspiration from beachy and beautiful Bahamas. She and I have been looking for occasional chairs that respect our environment and embrace natural materials, to remind her of the magical Bahamian landscapes. We soon turned to Pottery Barn and were thrilled to find their Seagrass Arm Chair (left), made from the natural and renewable seagrass fibres and abaca plant. Handwoven over a wood frame, these durable and natural chairs were the perfect look for her living space. Measuring 29” wide x 33” deep x 42” high with a 5” thick seat cushion, the Seagrass Wingback Chair sells for $549.

For a similar look we also found the Banana Armchair at Pier 1 Imports.  Made with mahogany, banana tree bark and rattan, this chair could be an excellent choice at a lesser cost: $369.95 (not including seat cushion). The Banana Armchair measures 31.5” wide x 31.5" deep x 40” high and can likewise fulfill the beach house look that we were out to achieve.

What do you think of these chairs?  Are you into the whole beachy look?
