Question of the Week: Which Chair is More Versatile?

Clockwise from the top: Wishbone chairs in dining room setting; Tobias chair from IKEA; Elana's mother's kitchen; Wishbone or Y chair by Hans J. Wegner, available through GabrielRoss.com.

Is it time to look elsewhere for dining room style? Or do we love these chairs so because of their boundless versatility?  Certainly not a new trend, but a prevailing one for sure!  I would LOVE to know which chair statistically appears more often on the pages of popular decor mags...  Though the Wishbone chair by Danish designer Hans J. Wegner (originally designed in 1950) is about six times the price -- in upwards of $600 a chair -- of IKEA's retro-looking Tobias chair ($129), I'd wager the count would be pretty close...

I will also add that I only know one person who actually owns the Wishbone chairs as dining room chairs (meaning, they bought six!), but that Sarah Richardson, Bryan Baeumler (watch my tour of B Baeum's basement to catch a peek of the chairs), my colleague Christine (of Balcony Makeover fame) and my mother (as per the photo above), have all made use of the Tobias chair.

Which do you prefer?  (Now, don't be rash and judge simply by the price tag...Think aesthetics and investment value!)
