Pantone has released their colour of the year, and it’s a deep, vibrant lilac, otherwise known as orchid (actually, truth be told I had to google it because ‘orchid’ meant nothing to me). It’s a light, pinky purple, that despite its name, is decidedly NOT a wallflower.
Though many are ready to embrace Pantone’s annual directive, I am a bit reticent. It’s a strong, bright, cool colour that makes me think of the girl aisle in the toy store. (Full disclosure: I just spent a year on maternity leave with my now 1-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl, and Radiant Orchid reminds me of pretty much every drawing my little girl makes. It’s her favourite marker…)
Pantone’s press release suggests pairing the colour with greens, blues and yellow, “Spruce up interior spaces by incorporating this eye-catching hue in paint, accent pieces and accessories. As adaptable as it is beautiful, Radiant Orchid complements olive and deeper hunter greens, and offers a gorgeous combination when paired with turquoise, teal and even light yellows.” Despite my love of colourful sofas, I’m not sure I’m ready for that much colour.
p.s. Is that a stick of French bread up there?
