Every month, we here at Style Sheet focus on one home decor trend that you'll also see repeating in fashion, food and entertaining -- that's why our friends from Slice.ca and Foodnetwork.ca join in the fun. September saw us seeing spots as whimsical and classic polka dot patterns found their way onto just about everything.
We all know cool weather is coming (here in Toronto, however, Thanksgiving weekend was positively summery!) and October is the ideal time to introduce some cozier items that will warm up the home. Velvet is a recurring fall trend -- no doubt due to its richness, texture and warmth. It's the perfect addition to your fall decor and works in all rooms of the house. Here are some inspirational photos to get you thinking!
This low-lying velvet-upholstered couch is the ideal size and material for lounging around in comfort -- just look at the size of the cushions! Cotton-blended velvet is surprisingly durable and works well for a busy family with kids.

This luxurious room has a similar neutral palette and I love the use of velvet damask for the stool cushions. It's a nice contrast between hard and soft and cold and warm. Creating contrast in textures and styles is a good rule to follow when decorating a space.

Blue and velvet go hand in hand whether you're a fan of Bobby Vinton 's hit song or David Lynch's creepy cult film. Jewel-toned velvet feels romantic and royal -- in fact, only members of royalty or daughters and wives of nobility could wear purple velvet during the Medieval era in England ( there's a little velvet trivia for you).

Velvet in the bedroom exudes classic Old Hollywood glamour and works just as well for grown-ups as it does for younger girls. Think velvet drapes, throw pillows, a bench at the end of the bed or a stool in front of a vanity.
Do you have anything velvety in your home?
